What is a Rust Embedded?

A Rust Embedded job involves developing software for embedded systems using the Rust programming language. These systems include microcontrollers, IoT devices, and real-time applications where performance, safety, and reliability are critical. Rust's memory safety features and concurrency support make it well-suited for embedded development, reducing common issues like buffer overflows and data races. Developers in this field work with low-level hardware interactions, device drivers, and firmware while optimizing for constraints like power consumption and processing speed.

What does a Rust Embedded do?

As a Rust Embedded engineer, your daily tasks often include designing, coding, and debugging firmware or low-level drivers in Rust, conducting hardware-software integration tests, and working closely with cross-functional teams such as hardware engineers and QA specialists. You may also participate in code reviews, optimize system performance, and document technical specifications to support maintainable development. Troubleshooting and resolving issues that arise during real-world device deployment is also a common responsibility. This role involves a mix of independent problem-solving and collaborative teamwork to ensure reliable, high-performance embedded solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Rust Embedded position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Embedded professional, you need strong proficiency in the Rust programming language, embedded systems design, and low-level hardware interaction, often supported by a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Experience with microcontroller platforms (such as ARM Cortex-M), version control systems like Git, and tools such as embedded debuggers or simulators is commonly required; certifications in embedded development or safety standards (e.g. ISO 26262) can be advantageous. Effective problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills are essential for successful project delivery. These skills ensure reliability, efficiency, and safety in developing robust embedded software for critical hardware applications.

Is Rust good for embedded systems?

Rust is increasingly used for embedded systems development due to its focus on safety, performance, and low-level control. It offers features like ownership and zero-cost abstractions, making it suitable for resource-constrained environments, and is supported by tools like Cargo and embedded-specific crates. Many embedded developers choose Rust for its reliability and modern language features.

This role offers hands-on experience across the embedded software development lifecycle, including requirements development, software design, implementation, hardware integration, debugging, and testing. A successful candidate will work closely with electrical, embedded software, GNC, mechanical, and test engineers to develop systems that support Specter's experimental and flight vehicle programs.

About Specter Aerospace

Specter Aerospace is building the next generation of hypersonic vehicles for U.S. Forces and Allies. Specter is headquartered just north of Boston in Peabody, MA where itleveragesits advanced propulsion technologies, manufacturing, and testing capabilities to rapidly develop supersonic and hypersonic systems. Our Embedded Software Co-op will be based in our Boston office in the Seaport district.Funded by a mix of government R&D organizations and private funding, Specter is expanding its team in preparation for flight testing and full-scale production.

Specter offers a wide diversity of tasks, projects, and technical exposure, all while providing co-ops with the same resources and project ownership as our full-time staff members. Our co-ops work closely with experienced engineers and scientists to complete projects that are critical to the mission of the company.

Role Responsibilities

  • Develop, integrate, and test embedded software for avionics systems, vehicle controllers, and ground-support equipment.
  • Apply software engineering fundamentals to design reliable and maintainable embedded systems.
  • Interface with electrical, embedded software, GNC, mechanical, and test engineering teams to refine requirements and define technical scope.
  • Implement software for ARM-based microcontrollers and other embedded computing platforms.
  • Support software integration with electrical hardware, sensors, actuators, communications systems, and other vehicle components.
  • Develop test plans and procedures for software shakedown, debugging, characterization, and verification.
  • Use laboratory equipment and software tools to diagnose hardware and software integration issues.
  • Interpret system requirements, interface definitions, and existing software documentation as systems evolve.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical meetings, design reviews, and cross-functional discussions.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects frominitialconcept through testing and documentation.

Required Qualifications
