What is a Rust Embedded?

A Rust Embedded job involves developing software for embedded systems using the Rust programming language. These systems include microcontrollers, IoT devices, and real-time applications where performance, safety, and reliability are critical. Rust's memory safety features and concurrency support make it well-suited for embedded development, reducing common issues like buffer overflows and data races. Developers in this field work with low-level hardware interactions, device drivers, and firmware while optimizing for constraints like power consumption and processing speed.

What does a Rust Embedded do?

As a Rust Embedded engineer, your daily tasks often include designing, coding, and debugging firmware or low-level drivers in Rust, conducting hardware-software integration tests, and working closely with cross-functional teams such as hardware engineers and QA specialists. You may also participate in code reviews, optimize system performance, and document technical specifications to support maintainable development. Troubleshooting and resolving issues that arise during real-world device deployment is also a common responsibility. This role involves a mix of independent problem-solving and collaborative teamwork to ensure reliable, high-performance embedded solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Rust Embedded position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Embedded professional, you need strong proficiency in the Rust programming language, embedded systems design, and low-level hardware interaction, often supported by a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Experience with microcontroller platforms (such as ARM Cortex-M), version control systems like Git, and tools such as embedded debuggers or simulators is commonly required; certifications in embedded development or safety standards (e.g. ISO 26262) can be advantageous. Effective problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills are essential for successful project delivery. These skills ensure reliability, efficiency, and safety in developing robust embedded software for critical hardware applications.

Is Rust good for embedded systems?

Rust is increasingly used for embedded systems development due to its focus on safety, performance, and low-level control. It offers features like ownership and zero-cost abstractions, making it suitable for resource-constrained environments, and is supported by tools like Cargo and embedded-specific crates. Many embedded developers choose Rust for its reliability and modern language features.

Job Description:

The Missionย Systemsย Software Engineerย will work on developingย solutions of a real time system environment to provide mission computing support at the center of an autonomousย aircraftย with sensor and weapons. This role willย workย toย establishย a softwareย architecture for a real time system thatย operatesย in a multi-level environmentย atย real time. Theย roleย willย requireย work with hardware,ย softwareย and systems teams to come to a consensus design. This role willย focus onย development of new systems and software designs from PDR, CoDR, CDR to lab test, flightย testย and fielding.ย

What you'll do:
  • Serve as a softwareย mission systemsย engineer for a safety- and mission-critical real-time mission-computing system aligned with A-GRA and AMS-GRA principles, profiles, interfaces, and data standards.ย

  • Define andย maintainย the end-to-end software architecture, including mission applications, platform services, middleware, operating-system interfaces, hardware-abstraction layers, networking, data distribution,ย componentย boundaries, and APIs.ย

  • Architect for deterministic real-time performance by addressing scheduling, latency, jitter, synchronization, throughput, resourceย utilization, distributed processing, and CPU/GPU/accelerator allocation.ย

  • Develop architecture views, interface definitions,ย data-flowย and deployment models, sequence and timing diagrams, resource budgets, trade studies, and technical decision records.ย

  • Integrate sensors, effectors, communications, navigation, autonomy, mission management, command-and-control, data-processing, and vehicle services in collaboration with hardware, FPGA, cybersecurity, safety, systems, integration, and test teams.ย

  • Design for mission resilience and assurance through fault detection and isolation, redundancy, graceful degradation, recovery, health monitoring, cybersecurity, airworthiness, certification, and requirements traceability.ย

  • Establish engineering practices for concurrency, synchronization, memory and resource management, deterministic execution, interface control, configuration management, and predictableย componentย integration.ย

  • Define and execute verification strategies across HIL/SIL laboratories, simulations, test benches, flight-test environments, and deployed systems using automated, performance, stress, fault-injection, interface, and timing tests.ย

  • Maintain technical ownership throughout the system lifecycle by evaluating enabling technologies and supplier designs, analyzing performance, managing technical debt and modernization roadmaps, promoting reuse, and communicating architectural decisions.ย

Required qualifications:
