What does a rural manager do?

A Rural Manager is responsible for overseeing development projects, resource management, and operations in rural areas. They often work with local communities, government agencies, and NGOs to implement programs that improve agricultural productivity, infrastructure, health, and education. Their role involves planning, coordinating, and monitoring activities to ensure sustainable rural development. They also help mobilize resources, build local capacity, and address issues unique to rural settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a rural manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rural Manager, you need expertise in rural development, project management, and a relevant academic background such as a degree in agriculture, rural development, or management. Familiarity with rural banking systems, government schemes, data analysis tools, and sometimes certifications in rural development are typical requirements. Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and leadership abilities help in engaging local communities and managing diverse teams. These competencies ensure effective implementation of rural projects, stakeholder collaboration, and sustainable development outcomes in rural areas.

What are some common challenges faced by rural managers and how can they be addressed?

Rural Managers often encounter challenges such as limited infrastructure, resource constraints, and the need to build trust within local communities. Overcoming these obstacles requires strong communication skills, adaptability, and creative problem-solving. Collaborating closely with local stakeholders, government agencies, and community organizations can help address resource gaps and ensure the successful implementation of projects. Additionally, understanding and respecting local customs is crucial for building long-term relationships and fostering community support.

Job description

Dragonfly Counselling & Support Centre is a non-profit, charitable organization supporting children, youth, and adults impacted by sexual violence and providing education and prevention programming related to sexual violence. DCSC's service region involves communities such as Athabasca, Slave Lake, Wabasca, Smoky Lake, Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Lac La Biche, St Paul and other rural and/or remote locations including Metis and First Nations communities.

The Youth Suicide Prevention Public Educator delivers impactful education and awareness initiatives across DCSC’s service region through our Roots & Wings program. This is a hybrid role where regular regional outreach is required to serve rural communities and local Métis Settlements and First Nations communities in the DCSC service area.
