What is Ruby on Rails?

Ruby on Rails is an application framework for web development. Specifically, it focuses on server-side functions and relies on the model-view-controller pattern. Rails is the framework itself, while Ruby is the programming language in which Rails is written. Ruby on Rails was designed to cut down on repetitive tasks and to be easy to learn with large, easily accessible libraries. It is open source as well, which means there is a large community that you can utilize to answer questions or improve your skills.

What is a Ruby on Rails developer?

Ruby on Rails developers are software engineers who specialize in building web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework. They use the Ruby programming language and the Rails framework to create scalable, maintainable, and efficient websites or web applications. Their responsibilities often include designing database structures, writing server-side logic, integrating front-end components, and deploying applications. Ruby on Rails developers work in a variety of industries and are valued for their ability to quickly develop robust web solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ruby on Rails developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ruby on Rails Developer, a solid grasp of Ruby programming, Rails framework, object-oriented design, and web development fundamentals is essential, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, and deployment tools like Heroku or AWS is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers collaborate with teams and address client needs efficiently. These skills are crucial for building robust, scalable web applications and adapting to evolving project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by Ruby on Rails developers when working in agile teams?

Senior Product Engineer

Belle, LLC

Atlanta, GA • Remote

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Job description

About Belle

Belle is a fast growing engagement company that is revolutionizing home healthcare - and it all begins with the feet. With 25M+ U.S. seniors no longer able to see or reach their feet, a lack of self care and mobility challenges cost the health insurance plans $38B+ in preventable medical spending every year.

Belle trains and manages a network of nail technicians or "Community Health Workers" who provide in-home foot care (aka medical pedicures). Belle uses cutting edge data science to identify those most in need on behalf of health plans and deploys its services accordingly. While in the home, Community Health Workers complete assessments and screenings, often being the first to identify emerging issues below and above the knee. As these issues arise, a team of remote nurses coordinate care with other healthcare providers - preventing serious and costly episodes.

Our mission: Bring Joy to Healthcare. Join us if our cause inspires you!

We're looking for a Senior Product Engineer who operates as a true product partner. You'll own significant areas of our product, make architectural decisions, and influence what we build-not just how. A core pillar of this role is data and analytics: you'll own the infrastructure, models, and reporting that make Belle a genuinely KPI-driven organization. You think in terms of patient and operational outcomes, weigh tradeoffs against business impact, and can push back on a spec when the data or the user need points elsewhere. You set the technical bar for the team and raise the people around you.

What You'll Do
  • Lead the design and delivery of major features across our Ruby on Rails web app and React Native mobile app
  • Own data and analytics as a core part of the role-build and maintain the reporting, dashboards, and underlying data models the entire organization relies on to make decisions
  • Partner with product and clinical leadership to shape roadmap and translate operational strategy into technical direction
  • Own architecture and technical decisions for your areas; balance speed, scalability, and maintainability
  • Set the standard for how the team uses AI coding tools to ship faster without sacrificing quality
  • Mentor engineers through code review, pairing, and design discussion
  • Identify high-leverage opportunities in product, operations, and data-and drive them
  • Help shape engineering practices, standards, and culture as we scale
Potential Products You Would Own
  • Our Community Health Worker mobile application that drives productivity, engagement, and data capture for our in-field mobile workforce
  • Our suite of scheduling and logistics tooling that drive workforce utilization and member engagement
  • A custom CRM platform that enables our growth and retention marketing teams to power predictable, cost-effective growth
  • Clinical tooling to drive patient outcomes and utilization/efficacy of our clinical staff

Requirements

      • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production software
      • Deep experience with React (or React Native) and Ruby on Rails-required
      • Strong command of SQL and relational databases-you can model data well, write performant queries, and reason about schema design. Data and analytics are a core pillar of this role, and our engineers own them, not just features
      • A track record of owning features or products end to end, including the product thinking behind them
      • Comfort operating with incomplete information, making decisions without extensive process, and building systems that may support 10x growth over the next few years
      • You're an early adopter and power user of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, etc.) and can show others how to get the most out of them
      • Strong product judgment: you've influenced what gets built, killed bad ideas early, and measured impact after shipping
      • A builder at heart-you make things on your own time because you can't help it (see concrete ask below)
      • Experience mentoring engineers and elevating team standards
      • Excellent communication across technical and non-technical stakeholders
Bonus if You Have:
    • Metabase or similar BI tooling-you'll likely be building in it regularly
    • Inertia.js experience
    • Healthcare, digital health, Medicare, or value-based care experience
    • Experience in fast-paced, high-growth, or startup environments

What does success in this role look like?

    • Within your first 12 months, you will:
    • Own a major product area
    • Improve company-wide reporting and analytics
    • Mentor and support other engineers on our team
    • Drive measurable improvements in operational KPIs through your product initiatives
One Concrete Ask

Send us something you've built-ideally something you own beyond your day job. A side project, an open-source contribution, a tool that scratched your own itch. Tell us what it does, the most interesting technical or product decision you made, and how AI coding tools fit into how you work today. We'd rather see one thing you're proud of than a long list of past employers..

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation based on experience
  • Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance Benefits
  • 401k
  • PTO, Sick, Wellness leave, and Paid Holidays
  • Opportunity for significant career growth and expansion of responsibilities
  • Ability to reshape an industry and protect lives
