What is a Ruby on Rails contractor?

Ruby on Rails contractors are professionals who specialize in building web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework. They are typically hired on a contract basis, either for short-term projects, specific features, or to augment in-house development teams. These contractors handle tasks such as backend development, API integration, database management, and sometimes front-end work, all centered around the Rails ecosystem. Their expertise allows businesses to rapidly develop, maintain, or upgrade web applications efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ruby on Rails contractor?

To thrive as a Ruby On Rails Contractor, you need strong programming skills in Ruby, expertise in the Rails framework, and a solid understanding of web application architecture, typically backed by experience or a relevant degree. Familiarity with tools like Git, PostgreSQL/MySQL, RESTful APIs, and deployment platforms such as Heroku or AWS is often required. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help contractors efficiently collaborate with clients and teams. These skills ensure high-quality, maintainable code and successful project delivery in competitive, fast-paced environments.

About Reserv
Reserv is an InsurTech company creating and incubating cutting-edge AI and automation technology to bring efficiency and simplicity to claims. We're stripping away the "mundane" to set a new global standard for the insurance industry!
Founded by industry veterans, with deep experience in SaaS and digital claims, Reserv is venture-backed by Bain Capital and Altai Ventures and began operations in May 2022. We're focused on automating highly manual tasks to tackle long-standing problems in claims while setting the new standard for TPAs, insurance technology providers and adjusters alike.
About the role
As a Staff Software Engineer at Reserv, you'll be at the heart of our growth journey, shaping the future of our technology and platform. You are a passionate engineer with proven successfully leading and executing on large projects. Reserv will be depending on you and your team to build a beautiful, powerful product from a user-story driven front-end all the way and a scalable back-end to robust APIs that make it easy to connect us with other next-generation solutions. For this role, we are seeking engineers with strong full-stack software engineering skills with a curiosity for systems, a proclivity for end-to-end ownership of features, and an ability to both run independently and collaborate well with fellow engineers and business-side teammates. If you are ready to mold the vision for Reserv's technology, join us on the journey.
What we need
  • Excel at defining the vision around delivering business-impacting goals
  • I rapidly deliver against large, cross-funtional, high-impact projects, proactively identifying and mititgigate risk.
  • I can clearly communicate with executive level stakeholders both internally and externally
  • Work with our tech stack: Ruby on Rails, Postgres, Typescript, React, GraphQL, NextJS, AWS
  • Help distill the core interactions a customer of Reserv will need to be successful in using our product, from the homepage, to the developer dashboard, to documentation centers and SDKs
  • Ship code that improves the developer experience, including the homepage, developer dashboard, Connect, SDKs, and the documentation center
  • Build frontend and backend components that improve the Reserv integration experience
  • Commit on your first day, and deploy code continuously
  • Support developers at customer companies
  • As we scale our product & engineering teams, collaborate closely with our product ops, design, and sales teams, as well as mentor junior engineers
  • Communicate ideas and specifications through detailed, precise writing
  • Influence the culture, values, and processes of a growing engineering team
  • Support the engineering function globally
  • Enjoy and have fun being creative and thinking outside of the box. You will need to draw on analogous situations you've worked on before, but we are not traversing well-traveled roads. "Where we're going, we don't need roads!"

Requirements
  • 10 years of experience as an individual contributor with experience using modern programming languages and front-end frameworks
  • Have a strong demonstrated ability to ship high-quality products, both at work and outside of work. We love engineers that build side-projects or contribute to open-source repos
  • A passion for building intuitive technology and a thirst for learning
  • Able to think through customer requirements and prioritize what is a must-have, nice-to-have, or irrelevant
  • Have a strong technical skillset but also the willingness and ability to take over tasks outside your core competency

Benefits
  • Generous health-insurance package with nationwide coverage, vision, & dental
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching
  • Competitive PTO policy - we want our employees fresh, healthy, happy and energized
