How much do rtos engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 5, 2026, the average yearly pay for rtos engineer in the United States is $101,752.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $84,000.00 and $116,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RTOS Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RTOS Engineer, you need a strong background in embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and a solid understanding of real-time operating system concepts, typically supported by a degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with RTOS platforms (such as FreeRTOS, VxWorks, or QNX), debugging tools, and hardware interfaces is commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for successful collaboration and troubleshooting. These skills are crucial for designing reliable, efficient embedded systems that meet precise timing and performance requirements in industries like automotive, aerospace, and IoT.

What are some common challenges RTOS Engineers face when integrating real-time operating systems with hardware platforms?

RTOS Engineers often encounter challenges related to timing constraints and resource management when integrating real-time operating systems with hardware. Ensuring that tasks meet strict deadlines, minimizing latency, and managing limited memory or processing power require close collaboration with hardware engineers. Debugging timing-related issues and optimizing software to work efficiently with various microcontrollers or processors are also common. Effective communication with cross-functional teams is essential to resolve hardware-software integration issues and deliver reliable embedded solutions.

What is an RTOS Engineer?

An RTOS (Real-Time Operating System) Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining software for embedded systems that require real-time performance. These engineers work with real-time operating systems to ensure that applications meet strict timing and reliability requirements, often found in industries like automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, and consumer electronics. Their responsibilities typically include configuring RTOS kernels, optimizing hardware-software integration, and troubleshooting time-sensitive software components.

What is the difference between Rtos Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectRtos EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering or related; knowledge of RTOSBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering or related; programming skills
Work EnvironmentEmbedded systems development, real-time applicationsEmbedded systems, firmware, device drivers
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, industrial automationConsumer electronics, medical devices, automotive

Rtos Engineers focus specifically on real-time operating systems, ensuring timely task execution, while Embedded Software Engineers develop broader embedded applications, including device drivers and firmware. Both roles often overlap but differ in scope and specialization.

Job Summary:
About the Role
We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer specializing in hands-on embedded C++ development for real-time feedback control systems running on an RTOS on an embedded microcontroller (MCU). You will build production firmware for medical instrument control platforms, contributing across requirements, development, integration, verification support, and sustaining in a regulated product development environment.
What You'll Do (Key Responsibilities)
  • Design, implement, and deliver reliable, high-quality embedded software with strong emphasis on C/C++ for embedded systems.
  • Develop and integrate real-time firmware/software for medical instrument control products, including timing-critical behaviors and deterministic execution on an RTOS.
  • Drive software requirements with team members and proactively integrate with system requirements to ensure end-to-end system performance.
  • Participate in change control activities, including investigation and resolution of software defects.
  • Apply software engineering best practices (unit/integration testing, static analysis, code reviews, design reviews, and clear documentation).
  • Collaborate across disciplines (software, systems, electrical, mechanical) and with non-engineering partners to deliver programs on schedule.
  • Support application/customer engineering needs as required, including troubleshooting and technical communication.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related discipline (Master's preferred).
  • 14+ years of applicable, progressively complex software design/development experience.
  • Strong proficiency in embedded C++ (and C), including developing production firmware on resource-constrained systems.
  • Expertise working with Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) in embedded products.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce robust software using disciplined engineering practices (debugging, defect resolution, and configuration/change control participation).

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)
  • Experience developing software in regulated industries, preferably medical devices.
  • Familiarity with medical software lifecycle expectations such as IEC 62304 and quality systems such as ISO 13485.
  • Experience with C# (e.g., tooling, test applications, or companion software).
  • Familiarity with software testing and test equipment/fixtures.
  • Knowledge of FPGA/VHDL (supporting broader platform development).

Why This Role
You'll build mission-critical embedded software that powers real-time medical instrument control systems, working in a product-focused environment where rigor, reliability, and performance matter.
