What is an RTOS engineer?

An RTOS (Real-Time Operating System) Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining software for embedded systems that require real-time performance. These engineers work with real-time operating systems to ensure that applications meet strict timing and reliability requirements, often found in industries like automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, and consumer electronics. Their responsibilities typically include configuring RTOS kernels, optimizing hardware-software integration, and troubleshooting time-sensitive software components.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RTOS engineer?

To thrive as an RTOS Engineer, you need a strong background in embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and a solid understanding of real-time operating system concepts, typically supported by a degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with RTOS platforms (such as FreeRTOS, VxWorks, or QNX), debugging tools, and hardware interfaces is commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for successful collaboration and troubleshooting. These skills are crucial for designing reliable, efficient embedded systems that meet precise timing and performance requirements in industries like automotive, aerospace, and IoT.

What are some common challenges RTOS engineers face when integrating real-time operating systems with hardware platforms?

RTOS Engineers often encounter challenges related to timing constraints and resource management when integrating real-time operating systems with hardware. Ensuring that tasks meet strict deadlines, minimizing latency, and managing limited memory or processing power require close collaboration with hardware engineers. Debugging timing-related issues and optimizing software to work efficiently with various microcontrollers or processors are also common. Effective communication with cross-functional teams is essential to resolve hardware-software integration issues and deliver reliable embedded solutions.

What is the difference between Rtos Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectRtos EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering or related; knowledge of RTOSBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering or related; programming skills
Work EnvironmentEmbedded systems development, real-time applicationsEmbedded systems, firmware, device drivers
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, industrial automationConsumer electronics, medical devices, automotive

Rtos Engineers focus specifically on real-time operating systems, ensuring timely task execution, while Embedded Software Engineers develop broader embedded applications, including device drivers and firmware. Both roles often overlap but differ in scope and specialization.

Job description

Senior Embedded Systems Developer with Zephyr RTOS IRC297403

We are looking to add a Senior Embedded Systems Developer (Zephyr RTOS) to our team.

Function: Software Product Engineering

Experience: 5-10 years

Location: Poland

Skills: Embedded Software, Git, Linux, SQL, ZEPHYR OS, Zephyr RTOS

In this role, you will be part of a distributed team that implements the core firmware for an innovative e‑bike ecosystem. The work is focused on creating intelligent, low‑level software that runs on resource‑constrained, connected embedded devices, enabling a mobile application to seamlessly connect to, control, and monitor the e‑bikes.

It is a dynamic environment where you participate throughout the complete software development lifecycle, including embedded design and architectural decisions within the Zephyr ecosystem. You will focus on software quality and process optimization through peer code reviews, continuous integration toolchains, and hardware‑level automation.

You will collaborate directly with software engineers, hardware experts, and client leaders.

Requirements
  • 4+ years of relevant experience in embedded software development and firmware engineering.
  • Deep hands‑on experience with Zephyr RTOS (including devicetree configuration, Kconfig, kernel services, driver development, and subsystem integration).
  • Proficiency in embedded C/C++ and modular firmware design.
  • Experience interacting with external hardware (HW), microcontrollers, and communication protocols (e.g., BLE, CAN bus, UART, SPI, I2C) – crucial for e‑bike connectivity and power management.
  • Solid understanding of software architecture, low‑level memory management, and hardware‑agnostic design principles.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools for embedded workflows, specifically GitHub Actions (automated pipelines, compilation, and hardware verification).
  • SQL and database knowledge (for managing local device data storage, telemetry logs, or configuration profiles).
  • Openness to coaching, mentoring, and growing team members in Zephyr RTOS engineering.
  • Excellent command of English with strong communication, assertiveness, and task‑prioritization skills.
Job Responsibilities
  • Firmware Architecture & Development: Analyze system requirements, design software features, and implement robust, modular firmware using Zephyr RTOS for resource‑constrained devices.
  • Hardware Integration: Implement service‑level integration, custom device drivers, and wireless/wired network stacks to link the e‑bike’s internal hardware components with the external ecosystem.
  • Process Optimization: Define and implement processes that streamline embedded development and continuous integration work on the project.
  • CI/CD Engineering: Integrate firmware compilation pipelines and automated binary verification workflows into GitHub Actions.
  • Mentorship & Leadership: Offer coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to team members; participate in architecture alignment sessions with clients and stakeholders.
  • Code Quality & Review: Participate in code reviews, ensure adherence to rigorous embedded standards, and contribute to core framework enhancements and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Work closely with mobile application developers, hardware engineers, and product managers to ensure seamless end‑to‑end product functionality.
