What is an RTE (Release Train Engineer)?

A Release Train Engineer (RTE) is a servant leader and coach for an Agile Release Train (ART), which is a team of multiple Agile teams working together to deliver value in a scaled Agile environment, often using the SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) methodology. The RTE facilitates ART events and processes, assists teams in delivering value, manages risks, and helps resolve obstacles. They work closely with Product Managers, Scrum Masters, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment, transparency, and continuous improvement across the ART. RTEs play a critical role in coordinating large-scale software development and ensuring the smooth operation of the ART.

How does an RTE (Release Train Engineer) facilitate collaboration between teams during a Program Increment (PI) in a SAFe environment?

As an RTE, you serve as a servant leader and facilitator for Agile Release Trains, ensuring that teams within the train are aligned and working toward common objectives. During a Program Increment (PI), you coordinate PI Planning sessions, help identify and remove cross-team dependencies or impediments, and foster open communication among stakeholders. You'll often work closely with Product Management, Scrum Masters, and System Architects to ensure priorities are clear and progress is transparent. This collaborative approach is essential for delivering value efficiently and continuously improving processes across the train.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RTE (Release Train Engineer), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Release Train Engineer (RTE), you need deep knowledge of Agile methodologies, experience in project or program management, and often a relevant bachelor's degree or SAFe certification. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Confluence, and Agile planning software is typical, along with understanding of PI Planning and workflow tracking systems. Outstanding facilitation, communication, and problem-solving skills help RTEs align teams and resolve impediments efficiently. These competencies are vital for coordinating multiple Agile teams, ensuring smooth delivery, and driving continuous improvement across large-scale projects.

Job description

Job Description:

At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we've tirelessly delivered on our promise to customers sending money globally, providing secure, simple, and reliable ways to manage their money, ensuring true peace of mind. Whether it's supporting loved ones back home, growing a business across continents, or pursuing new opportunities abroad, we're not just here to move money. We're here to move our global customers forward.
We're looking for builders, reimaginers, and global thinkers who want to work at the intersection of technology, trust, and transformation. If that's you and you're ready to do the most meaningful work of your career, we invite you to join over 2,800 passionate Remitlians worldwide who are united by our vision to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders.About the Role

The Remittance Transaction Engine (RTE) team owns the systems at the very heart of Remitly: the platform that accepts, orchestrates, and tracks every remittance our customers send. Every transaction, across millions of customers and 170+ countries, flows through RTE services. We provide the transaction gateway, processing, and search/read surfaces that customer-facing products and internal teams across Remitly build on. On systems where correctness directly affects customers' money, we prioritize reliability and operational excellence at scale.

This is a pivotal moment for the team: we are engineering a future-ready Transaction Platform, focused on transitioning to a modern, API-first architecture that empowers self-service integration for diverse product offerings at scale and migrating the company off legacy access patterns to a clean, API-first architecture. You'll help design that future while operating the Tier-1 systems that Remitly's business runs on today.

As a Software Development Engineer II on the team, you'll design and build backend services end-to-end, collaborate closely with product managers and partner engineering teams, and raise the bar for quality and operational excellence on systems where correctness directly affects customers' money. You'll work in an AI-forward engineering culture: we expect engineers to leverage AI tools effectively across coding, testing, debugging, and documentation to move faster, while owning the correctness of everything they ship. Verifying and fully understanding AI-assisted output matters even more on systems that move money.

You Will
  • Design and implement scalable, high-quality backend services and APIs at the core of Remitly's transaction processing platform

  • Contribute to our North Star architecture: building the new unified Transaction Platform Gateway and migrating consumers from legacy gateways and direct database access to well-designed APIs

  • Own features end-to-end: translate requirements into technical designs, break work into tasks, estimate effort, and deliver with quality, including testing, monitoring, and documentation

  • Use AI-assisted development to accelerate delivery, factoring it into your estimates and verifying AI-generated output meets the team's bar for correctness, security, and maintainability

  • Improve the reliability, observability, and performance of Tier-1 transaction systems, and participate in the team's on-call rotation

  • Partner with product managers and engineers across Remitly to understand consumer needs and translate them into reliable technical solutions

  • Provide constructive feedback in code and design reviews, upholding a high bar for correctness and maintainability

  • Support the growth of peers through pairing and code reviews when the opportunity arises

You Have
  • A degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience

  • 3+ years of professional software development experience building and maintaining production backend systems

  • Strong programming skills in Go, Kotlin, or similar languages (Java, Python, C++) with a demonstrated ability to learn new technologies

  • Proficiency in designing and building distributed systems on cloud platforms, particularly AWS

  • Experience optimizing how systems are deployed, tested, logged, and monitored; familiarity with CI/CD practices and infrastructure tooling

  • Ability to handle ambiguity in feature requirements and business expectations, and to independently drive features from design through delivery

  • Proven track record of writing clean, well-tested, modular code and providing thorough code reviews

  • Strong collaboration skills; comfortable partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to understand requirements and propose solutions

  • Experience using AI tools to accelerate code construction, testing, and documentation in a production environment

Nice to Have
  • Experience with payments, fintech, or other domains where data correctness and auditability are critical

  • Experience with large-scale migrations of live, high-throughput systems (service decomposition, database migrations, API-first re-platforming)
