Job description

Aluminum Dynamics

Hands-on operational support of primarily temperature measurement and burner systems. This role is part of a team with responsibility in all process areas of the plant and will directly support those process areas with routine maintenance, capability enhancements, and testing / troubleshooting.


  • Calibration, maintenance, testing and troubleshooting of pyrometry equipment (thermocouple, thermistor, RTD, IR-pyrometer)
  • Gas/Air-fired burner setup, optimization and troubleshooting
  • Support equipment functional tests in compliance with NFPA-86 Standard for Ovens and Furnaces and local requirements
  • Data analysis to define thermal process control limits and measurement sensitivity thresholds
  • Identification of improvement opportunities and proactive problem solving

Required:

  • Strong entrepreneurial approach, safety focus and technical curiosity
  • Electrical, Mechanical, Maintenance or Controls Technician (DC and up to 120VAC), with strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
  • Experience reading electrical, panel and mechanical drawings
  • Manufacturing, Operations, Construction or other front-line experience
  • Experience with contact and non-contact temperature measurement equipment (use, installation and calibration)
  • Experience with natural gas-fired industrial burners (setup, troubleshooting) and gas safety trains
  • Computer proficiency to include data compiling and analysis
  • Aluminum or Steel manufacturing experience strongly desired
  • Familiarity with NFPA and OSHA Codes and Standards
  • Familiarity with PLC’s and code architecture

Preferred:

  • S7 1500 series PLC and LogiCAD (Capable of troubleshooting control issues)
  • Wonderware HMIs (Capable of making changes to screens)
  • Industrial Networks (ControlNet, DeviceNet, Profinet, Ethernet)
  • Programming experience with TIA Portal and LogiCAD software
  • Programming experience with languages FBD, ST, Graph, and Ladder

Steel Dynamics is one of the largest and most diversified domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in the United States, with an estimated steelmaking and coating capacity of approximately 13 million tons, and facilities located throughout the United States and in Mexico. We operate using a circular manufacturing model, producing lower-carbon-emission, quality steel using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology with recycled ferrous scrap as the primary input. Our circular economy is powered by our three primary operating platforms: steel, metals recycling, and steel fabrication. Our steel operations produce steel products, including hot roll, cold roll, and coated sheet steel, structural steel beams and shapes, rail, engineered special-bar-quality steel, cold finished steel, merchant bar products, and specialty steel sections. Our metals recycling operations collect and process ferrous and nonferrous scrap from manufacturing and end-of-life items, such as automobiles, appliances, and machinery. This processed scrap is then sold to end-users for reuse, including our EAF steel mills, which produce new steel from the scrapped material. We sell a meaningful amount of steel to our own steel fabrication operations that in turn produce and sell structural steel joist and deck building systems to consumers.
