What is a range safety officer?

Range Safety Officers (RSOs) are individuals responsible for overseeing the safety and conduct of shooting activities at firing ranges. Their main duties include ensuring all range rules are followed, supervising shooters, managing emergencies, and preventing accidents. RSOs have the authority to stop shooting if unsafe practices are observed and are trained in range operations, firearm safety, and emergency procedures. They play a crucial role in creating a safe environment for everyone on the range.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a range safety officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Range Safety Officer, you need a strong understanding of firearms safety, range operations, and relevant safety regulations, often supported by NRA RSO certification or equivalent training. Familiarity with range communication systems, incident reporting tools, and safety equipment is typically required. Excellent attention to detail, clear communication, and assertiveness are crucial soft skills for enforcing rules and ensuring participant safety. These skills and certifications are essential to maintain a safe shooting environment and prevent accidents or injuries.
