LOCATION :KAUAI VETERANS MEMORIAL HOSP | Emergency Services

POSITION STATUS : 0.90 | Permanent

SALARY RANGE :BU09 | SR20

SALARY RATE: $102,384.00 (Annual Salary) based on the FTE

JOB DUTIES :This position is located in the Emergency Services department at Kauaโ€™i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) of the Hawaiโ€™i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kauaโ€™i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawaiโ€™i. HHSC Kauaโ€™i Region consists of KVMH and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both critical access hospitals; The Kauaโ€™i Region Clinics; and its affiliates.

The Emergency Services department plays a critical role in providing immediate medical care to patients experiencing acute health crises. This department is responsible for the rapid assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of medical emergencies, including trauma, cardiac events, respiratory distress, and other life-threatening conditions. The team, composed of emergency physicians, nurses, and support staff, operates 24/7 to ensure timely interventions, stabilization of patients, and coordination with other departments for comprehensive care. Additionally, the department focuses on triaging patients effectively, managing emergency resources, and implementing protocols to enhance patient outcomes while ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.

The Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) III provides professional nursing care within the Emergency Services department, coordinating care with other disciplines to address the psychosocial, physical, and overall needs of patients. This role involves prioritizing care based on patients\' physical and psychosocial requirements, as well as factors affecting patient flow through the system. The RPN III communicates effectively with Emergency Services physicians regarding changes in patient status, symptoms, and diagnostic study results. Additionally, the RPN III responds promptly and accurately to changes in patients\' conditions or responses to treatment and undertakes other assigned duties.

While primarily assigned to the Emergency Services unit, this position requires cross-training and floating to other units within the facility to assist based on operational needs. The RPN III will also be expected to work rotating shifts, including extended hours, weekends, and holidays.

This position reports to the RPN V (Unit Nurse Manager), position number 59228, or their designee.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week. Applicants are required to provide evidence of education, certification, and licensure.

EDUCATION:Applicants must have graduated from an accredited school of nursing.

EXPERIENCE: Six (6) months of professional nursing work experience.

SELECT CERTIFICATION:Of the six (6) months of professional nursing experience required,six (6) months of professional nursing experience must have been in emergency services.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Current certifications issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) for Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) are required at the time of appointment.
  • This position also requires obtaining NIH Stroke Scale certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • Current certificates for the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) are highly recommended.

LICENSE REQUIRED:License to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawai'i.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • KNOWLEDGE OF: Nursing theory and practice; biological, physical, social and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; thorough knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures.
  • ABILITY TO:Apply nursing theory and practices to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of patient\'s condition and take appropriate action; direct the work of nursing assistants; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff and employees; prepare comprehensive nursing diagnosis and nursing care plans; and plan and direct the work of lower level registered nurses and nursing assistants.
  • Familiarity with standards, regulations, requirements of Medicare, Medicaid, The Joint Commission, procedures used in surveillance and control of hospital infections.

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED: Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university school of nursing may be substituted for one year of nursing experience.

QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE: Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant\'s overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he/she can perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being considered.
