What is an RPG engineer?

RPG Engineers are specialized software developers who work primarily with the RPG (Report Program Generator) programming language, most often used on IBM i (AS/400) systems. They develop, maintain, and enhance business applications, focusing on areas such as finance, inventory, and manufacturing. RPG Engineers ensure that critical legacy systems remain robust and can integrate with modern technologies as needed. Their role is vital in organizations that rely on IBM i systems for their core business operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an RPG engineer?

To thrive as an RPG Engineer, you need a solid understanding of RPG (Report Program Generator) programming, IBM i (AS/400) systems, and business application development, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with tools like IBM Rational Developer for i, SQL, CL, and modern code management systems is essential. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you translate business requirements into reliable, maintainable code. These skills are crucial for ensuring robust, efficient business applications and supporting mission-critical operations on legacy platforms.

What are common challenges faced by RPG engineers when maintaining legacy systems?

RPG Engineers often work with legacy IBM i (AS/400) systems where codebases can be decades old and documentation may be limited or outdated. This can make troubleshooting and implementing updates challenging, as understanding the full impact of changes requires careful analysis. Additionally, integrating modern technologies with legacy RPG applications often demands creative problem-solving and collaboration with other IT teams to ensure compatibility and minimize disruption to business operations.
