This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Engineer, Backend - Core/API & Process Automation based in Netherlands.

This role offers the opportunity to build and improve the core backend systems powering next-generation business process automation.
The Software Engineer will work on distributed workflow technologies that support critical enterprise operations at global scale.

Accountabilities:

The Software Engineer, Backend - Core/API & Process Automation is responsible for designing, developing, and improving backend systems that enable reliable workflow execution and enterprise automation. This role requires strong engineering fundamentals, product thinking, and the ability to contribute to complex distributed systems in a collaborative environment.

  • Build and evolve backend features within event-sourced workflow engines and APIs supporting enterprise process automation.
  • Develop, test, and deliver high-quality software while contributing to technical designs and architecture decisions.
  • Design and maintain clean, reliable APIs with strong attention to developer experience, scalability, and backward compatibility.
  • Work on distributed systems challenges involving event sourcing, command/event architectures, CQRS patterns, concurrency, ordering, and system reliability.
  • Improve application performance by identifying inefficient processing patterns and optimizing data access across different storage technologies.
  • Build and enhance observability capabilities through logging, metrics, tracing, and monitoring practices.
  • Contribute to innovative automation features, including capabilities that enable intelligent agents to interact with business processes.
  • Maintain high engineering standards through code reviews, testing, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify technical debt and proactively recommend solutions to improve system quality and maintainability.
  • Participate in production support activities and on-call responsibilities as experience grows.
  • Collaborate effectively within a distributed, asynchronous engineering environment.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate has professional backend engineering experience and a strong interest in distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and scalable software development.   • 2+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
  • Strong understanding of backend development principles and software engineering best practices.
  • Experience or strong interest in event-driven systems and distributed architectures.
  • Understanding of concepts such as consistency, ordering, failure handling, and event sourcing fundamentals.
  • Good API design skills, including creating clean REST interfaces and maintaining backward compatibility.
  • Product-oriented mindset with a focus on delivering meaningful user outcomes.
  • Ability to independently manage priorities, drive projects forward, and communicate progress effectively in a remote environment.
  • Strong written communication skills for asynchronous collaboration.
