Small Animal Surgery Section Head - Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University
The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine (SSVM) of Rowan University invites applications for the position of Small Animal Surgery Section Head within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This is a full-time, 12-month academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Appointment may be in the clinical or tenure track, depending on the qualifications and professional goals of the successful candidate.
This position represents a unique opportunity to serve as a founding faculty member of a new veterinary school and to play a leadership role in shaping clinical services, education, and culture as the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine continue to grow.
Position Summary
The Small Animal Surgery Section Head serves as the clinical, operational, and academic leader for the Small Animal Surgery section overseeing surgery, anesthesia, neurology, and dentistry services. In addition to fulfilling the responsibilities of a Clinical Assistant Professor (or higher rank), the Section Head acts as the primary liaison between the service and hospital leadership, ensuring alignment of clinical operations, teaching, and institutional priorities.
The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of an integrated, organ-systems-based veterinary curriculum, provide clinical service in the SSVM Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and foster a collaborative, high-functioning surgical service that supports patient care, student learning, and hospital growth.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Operational Leadership
  • Represent the Small Animal Surgery section to Hospital Leadership and communicate leadership priorities to the section.
  • Coordinate with other Section Heads to support interdepartmental collaboration and integrated clinical operations.
  • Participate in and/or lead section meetings and clinical service check-ins.
  • Oversee clinician scheduling, including PTO, CE requests, holiday and on-call schedules, and timesheet approvals.
  • Ensure timely completion of medical records (within 24 hours) in compliance with hospital and state standards.
  • Troubleshoot clinical, organizational, and interpersonal issues within the section, escalating concerns as appropriate to the Department Head.
  • Serve as a liaison to the referring veterinarian community to promote strong DVM relationships and client satisfaction.

Operational Development & Oversight
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Services Department Head to develop and implement clinical SOPs, templates, forms, and operational tools.
  • Assist with troubleshooting service operations including scheduling workflows, equipment maintenance, inventory stock, and clinical protocols.
  • Interface with the Veterinary Technician Manager regarding technician staffing, training, and service support needs.
  • Maintain responsibility for inventory management, including inventory lists, supply ordering, and vendor coordination.
  • Adhere to and assist in managing the section budget, as applicable.

Faculty & Team Development
  • Actively participate in recruitment, onboarding, and integration of new faculty and staff within the section.
  • Support the Clinical Services Department Head with corrective discussions, performance improvement plans (PIPs), annual clinical faculty reviews, salary recommendations, and hiring or termination processes.
  • Promote a collaborative, respectful, and accountable team culture.

Teaching, Scholarship & Service
  • Provide clinical instruction and mentorship to veterinary students in a teaching hospital setting.
  • Engage in scholarly activity that advances the discipline of veterinary surgery; the scope of scholarship will depend on appointment track and may include collaborative or independent research.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support the growth and success of the Small Animal Surgery service and the School.

Facilities
Clinical service will be delivered in SSVM's 50,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Veterinary Teaching Hospital located on Rowan University's Glassboro Campus. The hospital provides primary and specialty care for companion, food, and fiber animals throughout New Jersey and surrounding states.
Required Qualifications
  • DVM or equivalent degree.
  • Completion of a residency with board certification or board eligibility in surgery, anesthesia, neurology or dentistry.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership/management
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching veterinary students in a clinical setting (strongly preferred).
  • Licensed in or eligible for licensure in the State of New Jersey.
  • NJ CDS permit (or obtained upon hire).
  • DEA registration (or obtained upon hire).

Salary Range
In compliance with the State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $150,000 to $200,000. Salary will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, scope of responsibilities, internal equity, and market considerations.
