What is a rotational project engineer?

Rotational Project Engineers are early-career engineering professionals who participate in structured programs that rotate them through different departments, projects, or locations within a company. These rotations provide exposure to various aspects of engineering, such as design, manufacturing, operations, and project management. The goal is to develop a well-rounded skillset, build a broad understanding of the organization, and identify areas of interest for long-term career growth. Rotational Project Engineers often work with mentors and are given increasing responsibility as they progress through the program.

How does the rotational aspect of a rotational project engineer role enhance professional development and career growth?

The rotational structure allows project engineers to gain hands-on experience across multiple departments or project phases, such as design, procurement, construction, and commissioning. This exposure helps develop a broad skill set, fosters cross-functional understanding, and enables you to discover your professional strengths and interests. Employers often use these programs to identify high-potential employees for future leadership roles, making it an excellent pathway for career advancement. Additionally, frequent team changes enhance adaptability and communication skills, both of which are highly valued in engineering management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a rotational project engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rotational Project Engineer, you need a bachelor's degree in engineering, strong analytical abilities, and a solid understanding of project management principles. Familiarity with CAD software, project scheduling tools like MS Project, and possibly certifications such as EIT or PMP is often valued. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills help you succeed in varied assignments and environments. These competencies ensure you can quickly contribute to diverse projects, learn new systems, and collaborate effectively across departments.

Job description

Are you looking to open the doors to a dynamic career combining strategic thinking, hands-on experience, and leadership development? At ASSA ABLOY, our operations professionals continually push the boundaries of what is possible - how can we drive efficiency? optimize processes? make a tangible impact? Put simply: they challenge the status quo to improve our business daily.

Ourย Rotational Development Program (RDP)ย is a two-year journey (24 months) designed to immerse you in the core of ourย Engineering, Operations, and Supply Chainย organizations. Through multiple assignments across various facilities within the Commercial Segment of the Americas Division, you'll gain broad exposure to our business, work alongside experienced professionals, and accelerate your career.

Three Focus Areas

As a member of the RDP, you will have an opportunity to experience all facets of our business.ย  Our goal is to expose you to the breadth of ASSA ABLOY products, processes, and team members that make our business so successful.ย  The RDP is built around three, core areas:

Engineering

Work directly with our engineering teams to support product development, process improvement, and technical problem-solving. You'll gain hands-on experience with manufacturing technologies, quality systems, and continuous improvement initiatives that drive innovation and performance.

Operational Excellence

Experience the full scope of our production environments. Collaborate with manufacturing teams, plant leadership, and operational excellence experts to ensure our products are built and delivered to the highest standards. You'll apply LEAN principles, support Six Sigma projects, and contribute to strategic initiatives like facility planning and site optimization.

Supply Chain

During this rotation, you will work with our Global Supply Chain team.ย  You will have the opportunity to enhance your logistics, planning, and purchasing skills while optimizing how our supply chain services our production, and warehousing, facilities.ย  In today's globalized marketplace, our supply chain professionals are experts at ensuring a steady flow of materials while optimizing our cost structure.

You won't just get a job here. You'll join a global team.

Your rotation will expose you to nearly 175+ brands, in 70 countries, across countless different roles. Within the Americas Division, there are nearly 16,500 team members collaborating with almost 6,000 professionals within the ASSA ABLOY Global Team. This distinction sets us apart as the world leader in access solutions.

About you

To be a competitive candidate, you will need to be an intellectually curious team player, ready to take on the challenges of tomorrow.ย  We expect you to have an Engineering, Supply Chain, or Operations-related degreeย with a minimum 3.0 GPA.ย  ย Completing prior, degree-specific internships is desirable.ย  You should have a strong track record of involvement and engagement with on/off campus activities. You must have excellent communication skills, a self-starter, motivated, and driven to seek out challenges and find solutions.ย  As a member of the RDP, you will have an opportunity to see and work at many of our manufacturing locations.ย  You must be willing to relocate to each rotation site as well as be prepared to travel for potential trips.
