Overview
The Class III Water Treatment Plant Supervisor is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of a municipal water treatment plant serving the Hot Springs community. This position provides day-to-day leadership and supervision of three water treatment employees while remaining actively involved in plant operations. The Supervisor ensures compliance with all applicable Virginia Department of Health and regulatory requirements, maintains water quality and treatment standards, coordinates maintenance and repairs, and supports the continued reliability of the water treatment system. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring sound judgment, technical expertise, and a strong commitment to public health and safety.
Responsibilities
  • Direct and oversee the daily operation of the Class III water treatment plant and related equipment and facilities.
  • Supervise, schedule, train, coach, and evaluate three water treatment employees.
  • Monitor treatment processes, water quality, chemical usage, equipment performance, and operating conditions.
  • Perform and oversee required sampling, testing, recordkeeping, reporting, and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Ensure compliance with Virginia Department of Health, state, and federal drinking water regulations and applicable permits.
  • Identify and troubleshoot operational issues and respond appropriately to equipment failures, water quality concerns, and emergency situations.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance, repairs, equipment replacement, and outside contractor activities.
  • Maintain accurate plant operating records, logs, inventories, and other required documentation.
  • Monitor chemical and supply inventories and assist with purchasing and budget development.
  • Establish and maintain safe work practices and ensure employees follow applicable safety procedures.
  • Develop and maintain employee knowledge and competency through ongoing training and hands-on instruction.
  • Assist with planning for capital improvements and long-term needs of the water treatment facility.
  • Participate in an on-call or emergency response rotation as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Virginia Class III Waterworks Operator License required.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in water treatment plant operations, preferably in a municipal or public water system.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of water treatment processes, chemical treatment, water quality monitoring, equipment operation, and regulatory requirements.
  • Previous supervisory or lead experience preferred.
  • Ability to interpret and comply with Virginia Department of Health and applicable federal drinking water regulations.
  • Strong troubleshooting, decision-making, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and develop employees effectively.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and complete required regulatory documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and respond effectively to emergency and after-hours situations.
  • Valid driver's license required.
