What is a ROS software engineer?

A ROS Software Engineer is a software developer who specializes in working with the Robot Operating System (ROS), an open-source framework used for programming robots. Their main responsibilities include designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software packages and nodes that enable robot perception, navigation, and manipulation. ROS Software Engineers collaborate with hardware teams to integrate sensors, actuators, and other components, and often work with simulation tools to test robot behaviors before deploying them to real robots. They are usually proficient in programming languages like C++ and Python and have a good understanding of robotics concepts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a ROS software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a ROS Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills in C++ and Python, a solid understanding of robotics fundamentals, and experience with the Robot Operating System (ROS). Familiarity with ROS tools, simulation environments like Gazebo, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Effective problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills are essential for collaborating on complex robotic projects. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable robot software, integrating hardware, and ensuring successful deployment in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges faced by ROS software engineers when integrating new hardware with ROS systems?

One of the most frequent challenges for ROS Software Engineers is ensuring seamless communication between new hardware components and existing ROS nodes. This often requires writing custom device drivers, handling differences in communication protocols, and troubleshooting issues such as latency or misaligned sensor data. Additionally, maintaining compatibility with various ROS distributions and managing dependencies can be complex, especially in multidisciplinary teams where hardware and software development are tightly coupled. Effective collaboration with hardware engineers and thorough testing are essential to overcoming these integration hurdles.

Job description

Software Engineer IDescriptionAbout this Role

We are seeking a hands-on Software/Embedded Systems Engineer to join our UAS development team. This role focuses primarily on developing C software running on embedded Linux platforms, integrating sensors and avionics, and working closely with hardware. Candidates should be comfortable working directly with physical systems, performing hardware/software integration, and developing applications using frameworks such as ROS/ROS2. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys practical engineering, system-level debugging, contributing to advanced UAS capabilities, and supporting both next-generation technologies and proven platforms used to protect deployed warfighters.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain C software for UAS systems running on embedded Linux platforms.

  • Implement and integrate ROS/ROS2 nodes for autonomy, perception, control, mission management, or sensor handling.

  • Participate in software development across all phases of the lifecycle—from concept development through lab integration, evaluation, and field testing.

  • Perform hands-on hardware integration, including connecting sensors, payloads, communication modules, computer hardware, and embedded control systems.

  • Troubleshoot system-level issues involving software, hardware interfaces, networking, and real-time constraints.

  • Work cohesively on multi-functional teams to deliver reliable, performant, and well-validated system functionality under dynamic, fast-paced program needs.

  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to software architecture, system design improvements, and development best practices.

QualificationsLevel I:
  • Currently pursuing or completed B.S. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field
Required Skills
  • Strong proficiency in C .

  • Experience developing on embedded Linux platforms.

  • Ability to debug complex system interactions across hardware and software.

  • Understanding of embedded systems concepts (I/O interfaces, timing, networking, real-time application considerations).

  • Familiarity with software configuration management, defect tracking, and continuous integration tools (e.g., GitLab, Jenkins).

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with UAS, autopilots, and integration (PX4, ArduPilot)

  • Experience working with ROS/ROS2.

  • Demonstrated hands-on hardware experience (sensor integration, interfaces, debugging, lab equipment usage)

  • Experience coding in Python

  • Experience in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, and machine learning techniques.

  • Practical experience implementing or optimizing CV/ML models using frameworks such as OpenCV, TensorRT, TensorFlow/Keras/TensorFlow Lite, PyTorch, OpenVINO, or similar.

  • Experience building and maintaining toolchains for automated builds and deployments.

  • Strong understanding of automated testing and CI/CD processes.

  • Ability to work with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, protocol analyzers and emulators
