Roper information

What does a roper do?

Ropers are skilled workers, often found in ranching or rodeo settings, who use a lasso or rope to catch livestock such as cattle or horses. Their primary duties include rounding up, restraining, and sometimes caring for animals. In rodeo events, a roper's job is to demonstrate speed and accuracy in catching and sometimes tying animals, typically calves or steers. Outside of sports, ropers play an essential role in managing herds for branding, medical care, and transportation. The job requires strong horsemanship, quick reflexes, and knowledge of animal behavior.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a roper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Roper, you need excellent hand-eye coordination, physical strength, and experience with livestock handling, often gained through on-the-job training or a background in ranch work. Familiarity with roping equipment such as lassos, saddles, and proper animal restraint techniques is essential. Strong communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure the safe and efficient management of livestock, contributing to successful ranch operations.

What are some common challenges faced by a roper on a ranch or in a rodeo setting?

Ropers often work in fast-paced, physically demanding environments where precision and timing are crucial. Common challenges include handling unpredictable livestock, maintaining equipment such as ropes and saddles, and staying physically fit to prevent injuries. Additionally, ropers must collaborate closely with other ranch hands or team members, especially during cattle roundups or competitive events, requiring strong communication and teamwork skills. Adapting to varying weather conditions and long hours is also a regular part of the role.

Job description

PowerPlan is the leading provider of financial software solutions purpose-built for asset-intensive companies in the energy, utility, oil & gas, transportation, and telecommunications industries. For 30 years, we've helped more than 200 companies optimize financial decisions across the enterprise capital lifecycle. As a Roper Technologies company, we combine the stability of a proven platform with the ambition of a team driving our next generation of SaaS solutions, including PowerPlan NXT.

Overview

PowerPlan is seeking a high-impact Director of Product Strategy & GTM to serve as a key architect of our long-term growth. Reporting directly to the Chief Product Officer, you will be responsible for defining where PowerPlan plays and how we win.

This is a high-visibility role that requires a blend of rigorous market analysis, financial acumen, and hands-on execution. You will bridge the gap between high-level vision and operational reality, ensuring our investments are data-driven and our go-to-market (GTM) execution is world-class.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Growth & Market Expansion: Conduct rigorous analysis of new market opportunities, including market sizing, segmentation, competitive landscape analysis, and customer needs research to identify and prioritize growth opportunities. Develop the roadmap for taking existing products into adjacent spaces to maximize portfolio value.
  • Business Case Development & Investment Guidance: Build business cases and investment recommendations for executive leadership. Monitor macro trends in the energy, utility, and regulated industries, including regulatory shifts, technology adoption patterns, and emerging buyer needs, to ensure PowerPlan\'s strategy remains ahead of the market.
  • Go-to-Market (GTM) Strategy & Execution: Define the how we win playbook. This includes pricing strategy, competitive positioning, and the creation of high-impact content and thought leadership to establish PowerPlan as a market authority. Design and execute launch plans that align product, sales, marketing, customer success, and professional services around clear objectives, timelines, and success metrics.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Establish the instrumentation and KPIs necessary to track product performance. You will turn raw data into actionable insights that influence our product trajectory.
  • Metrics & Performance Reporting: Establish and own key product performance metrics, including adoption, engagement, market share, NPS, and revenue impact. Build reporting that gives the CPO and leadership team clear visibility. Systematize feedback loops between customers, sales, support, and product management to ensure market signals are captured, prioritized, and acted on.
Key Performance Objectives
  • Strategic Market Assessment: Conduct a thorough assessment of PowerPlan\'s current market position, competitive landscape, and whitespace opportunities across the product portfolio. Present initial strategic recommendations for market expansion and product investment priorities to executive leadership. Present findings within 90 days of hire.
  • Cross-Functional GTM Alignment: Establish deep working relationships and clear alignment with Sales, Marketing, and Customer Success leadership on upcoming product launches and go-to-market priorities. Establish and codify GTM processes and cross-functional participants within 120 days of hire.
  • Product Performance Instrumentation: Define and implement the core metrics framework for PowerPlan\'s product portfolio, including adoption, engagement, competitive win rate, and revenue impact indicators. Deliver an initial reporting dashboard and establish a recurring cadence of performance reporting to the CPO and executive team within 120 days of hire.
  • Measurable Commercial Impact: Demonstrate quantifiable contribution to key commercial outcomes, including pipeline growth, competitive win rate improvement, and market expansion progress directly attributable to new strategies. Deliver an executive strategy scorecard within the first year of hire.
Requirements
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Business, Marketing, Strategy, or a related field; MBA or strategy consulting background preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in product strategy, product marketing, go-to-market leadership, or strategic roles in B2B enterprise software companies.
  • 4+ years in a senior or director-level role with demonstrated ownership of strategic outcomes, not just functional execution.
  • Strong financial literacy with experience managing business cases and P&L impacts.
  • Proven track record of leading market assessments, building investment cases, and shaping product or portfolio strategy at the executive level.
  • Strong product marketing skills with the ability to craft positioning and messaging that wins in complex, technical, enterprise sales cycles.
  • Operational discipline with experience building processes, frameworks, or teams that improved how a product organization plans, launches, and measures.
  • Analytical fluency — comfortable with market data, financial modeling, and quantitative analysis to inform strategic decisions.
  • Exceptional cross-functional influence — able to build alignment across product, sales, marketing, finance, and executive teams through clarity and credibility, not authority.
  • Experience in the energy, utility, or regulated industry software space is preferred.
  • Background in financial software, ERP ecosystems, or asset management technology is a plus.
