Job description

Job Summary

The Principal Failure Analysis Electrical Engineer is responsible for leading system-level failure investigations on deployed power systems serving the Communications and Data Center markets. The role provides technical leadership for complex field issues, drives root cause analysis, develops corrective actions, and supports product reliability improvement across Vertiv's installed base.

This position works closely with engineering, quality, manufacturing, services, suppliers, and customers to resolve high-impact field issues affecting deployed products. The role requires strong technical expertise in electrical design, controls, and system integration, along with the ability to lead investigations where failure mechanisms are unknown or difficult to reproduce.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead complex system-level failure investigations involving power systems, controls, firmware, electrical hardware, and subsystem interactions.
  • Drive root cause analysis activities for field failures using engineering analysis, testing, data review, and structured problem-solving methods.
  • Support field investigations through site visits, collection of field data, review of logs, and analysis of failed hardware.
  • Develop and execute investigation plans to reproduce field conditions and validate failure mechanisms.
  • Work with suppliers, test laboratories, and internal teams to evaluate failed components and identify root causes.
  • Prepare and communicate technical findings, corrective actions, and recommendations to internal stakeholders and customers.
  • Support customer-facing discussions related to failure analysis activities and corrective actions.
  • Provide technical leadership during high-priority customer escalations and field events.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience in power systems, power electronics, telecommunications power, data center infrastructure, or related industries.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis and troubleshooting complex electrical systems.
  • Experience with laboratory testing, failure analysis techniques, and engineering investigation methods.
  • Strong technical communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to travel to customer sites as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of power conversion systems, rectifiers, converters, controls, and system integration.
  • Experience with reliability engineering, supplier quality investigations, and field support activities.
  • Familiarity with controller-based power systems, firmware interactions, and system diagnostics.
  • Experience leading cross-functional investigations involving engineering, quality, manufacturing, and suppliers.

Work Environment:

  • Office, laboratory, manufacturing, and customer site environments.
  • Periodic domestic and international travel may be required.
  • Ability to support field investigations and customer site visits as necessary.
