What is a rollback driver?

A Rollback Driver operates a rollback tow truck to transport vehicles, machinery, or other equipment. They load and secure items onto the truck’s flatbed using winches and tie-downs. Rollback Drivers commonly assist stranded drivers, move damaged or illegally parked vehicles, or transport cars for dealerships and repair shops. The job requires knowledge of vehicle loading techniques, safety procedures, and proper truck operation. Strong driving skills, a valid license, and sometimes a commercial driver’s license (CDL) are necessary.

What does a rollback driver do?

A typical day for a Rollback Driver involves responding to dispatch calls to recover and transport vehicles, which may include roadside assistance, accident recovery, or relocating cars for repair shops and dealerships. Drivers spend much of their time on the road, loading and unloading vehicles using hydraulic equipment, and ensuring all safety measures are followed. The role often requires interaction with customers facing stressful situations, so professionalism and empathy are important. Schedule flexibility is commonly needed since work may include nights, weekends, or on-call shifts, depending on the employer.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a rollback driver?

To thrive as a Rollback Driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), a clean driving record, and experience operating rollback tow trucks. Familiarity with vehicle recovery equipment, safety protocols, and GPS navigation systems is essential. Strong customer service skills, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help set top performers apart. These skills ensure that vehicles are transported safely and efficiently while providing a positive experience for customers in often stressful situations.

How do you become a rollback driver?

To become a rollback driver, you typically need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with the appropriate endorsements, such as a Class B or Class A license. Experience driving large vehicles and knowledge of safety procedures are important, and some employers may require completion of a training program or certification in vehicle operation and safety. A clean driving record is also often necessary.

How much does a rollback driver make?

A rollback driver typically earns between $12 and $20 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer. Some drivers may also receive benefits or overtime pay, especially for long shifts or overnight work.
