Driver

The Driver will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of commercial vehicles to collect and transport waste and recyclable material to the dumpsite. The driver plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and timely collection and proper disposal of solid waste, green waste, and/or recycling materials while adhering to all relevant safety and environmental regulations.

SALARY RANGE: $31.65 - $34.00/hour

Essential Duties:
  • Operate commercial vehicles, such as automated side loader, front-loaders, rear-loaders, roll-off trucks, or transfer trucks, in a safe and efficient manner
  • Follow designated routes and schedules for waste collection and transport
  • Collect waste materials from residential, commercial, or industrial sites by completing all routes in a timely manner while maintaining efficiency and within the route standards
  • Load waste into the truck using appropriate equipment, such as hydraulic lifts or compactors
  • Optimize the route to minimize unnecessary trips to the designated disposal or recycling facilities while ensuring secure and compliant handling
  • Minimize delays and disruptions to the schedule by not having any misses per week and promptly completing paperwork in morning and afternoon/evening
  • Perform a daily and thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle to ensure safety and proper functioning
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times to ensure well-being
  • Follow safe driving practices, including defensive driving techniques and adherence to traffic laws including no use of cell phone or radios while driving
  • Use three Points of Contact and be aware of surroundings at all times to ensure grippers and forks are always positioned in safe manner
  • Report any mechanical issues or maintenance needs promptly for repairs
  • Represent Burrtec in a professional manner as a frontline representative
  • Deliver excellent customer service and wear the assigned uniform
  • Be courteous, respectful, and professional when interacting with customers and coworkers
  • Address customer inquiries, requests, and complaints immediately and with empathy, striving to exceed customer expectations whenever possible
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, regulations, and company policies while operating commercial vehicles
  • Respect all company equipment by keeping the cab clean at all times and not obstruct or tamper with the on-board camera system
  • Follow all DOT Regulations daily (10-hour rule, 34 hour reset and 12 hour logs)
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards for waste transportation and disposal
  • Maintain clear and open communication with supervisors, dispatchers, and fellow team members by using communication tools such as radios or on-board electronics to stay connected and informed throughout the workday
  • Review and approve timecard on a weekly basis
  • Follow meal period policy by taking 30-minute meal within 5th hour and a second 30-minute meal period by 10th hour if working 12 hours or more
  • Maintain accurate records of waste collection activities, including logs, work orders, and route sheets
  • Assists with other routes and work mandatory OT as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Valid Class "A" or "B" California Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restrictions, required These positions require the review of motor vehicle records (MVRs) prior to or during consideration of application as well as ongoing review through California's Electronic Pull Notice (EPN) Program
  • Clean driving record with no major violations or DUI within last 3 years One (1) Year of work experience as a Commercial Driver, required
  • Experience in the waste management or transportation industry, preferred
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures related to commercial driving
  • Be able to communicate in English and understand and complete route sheets, required

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

The job involves outdoor work and exposure to various weather conditions. Flexible working hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required to accommodate waste collection schedules. Commercial Drivers should be prepared for physically demanding work and be comfortable operating heavy machinery. This position is exposed to changing road conditions and closures.

This job requires the ability to lift, push and pull up to 75 lbs., climb in and out of the truck cab frequently and perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials. There is continuous eye/hand coordination, handling, and wrist motion, hearing and smelling.
