Job description

Job Summary:
The Rohingya/Burmese Medical Interpreter provides in-person language interpretation and translation services for Rohingya or Burmese speaking patients and healthcare providers to ensure accurate communication in medical settings. This position is on an as-needed basis and plays a critical role in enhancing patient care, safety, and satisfaction within the clinic. Knowledge of both languages is ideal.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provide face-to-face interpretation between Rohingya/Burmese speaking patients and healthcare providers in a clinical setting.
  • Accurately convey medical information, including diagnoses, treatment plans, medication instructions, and informed consent discussions.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations at all times.
  • Assist patients in understanding and navigating healthcare services, including appointment scheduling, follow-up care, and referrals.
  • Translate medical documents, forms, and educational materials from English to Rohingya/Burmese and vice versa as needed.
  • Act as a cultural liaison to facilitate effective communication between patients and staff.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and impartiality in all interactions.
  • Stay updated on medical terminology, interpreter ethics, and best practices.

Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a medical interpreter, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Completion of a medical interpreter training program preferred.
  • National medical interpreter certification (e.g., CCHI or NBCMI) is a plus.

Skills & Competencies:
  • Proficiency in Rohingya and Burmese, with strong verbal and written communication skills in the chosen language and English.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, procedures, and healthcare systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with ethical guidelines.
  • Cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse patient populations.

Working Conditions:
  • PRN (as needed) position with flexible scheduling.
  • Work will be performed in a clinic setting.
  • Requires prolonged periods of standing or sitting.
