Roc Operator information

What is a ROC operator?

ROC Operators, or Remote Operations Center Operators, are professionals responsible for monitoring and managing operations of remote systems, such as power plants, data centers, or industrial facilities, from a centralized location. They use specialized software and tools to oversee system performance, detect anomalies, respond to alarms, and ensure operational efficiency and safety. ROC Operators play a critical role in maintaining uptime, troubleshooting issues, and coordinating with on-site personnel to resolve problems quickly. Their work helps organizations ensure continuous and reliable operation of critical infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a ROC operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a ROC (Remote Operations Center) Operator, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in industrial operations or technical fields, often supported by relevant certifications. Familiarity with SCADA systems, remote monitoring tools, and incident management platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to stay calm under pressure are standout soft skills. These skills ensure efficient monitoring, rapid response to incidents, and the safe, continuous operation of critical infrastructure.

What are some common challenges faced by ROC operators, and how can they be addressed?

ROC Operators often encounter challenges such as monitoring multiple systems simultaneously, responding quickly to alarms, and maintaining accurate logs under pressure. Effective time management and strong attention to detail are essential to prevent oversight and ensure operations run smoothly. Collaborating with other departments and regularly participating in training sessions can help ROC Operators stay updated on procedures and improve response times. Developing strong communication skills also aids in efficiently escalating issues and coordinating with team members.

What is the difference between Roc Operator vs Drilling Rig Operator?

Job description

The Remote Operations Center (ROC) Manager leads a team of operators across rotating 24/7 shifts, providing real-time oversight of a multi-technology renewable energy portfolio spanning wind, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) assets. The portfolio is currently concentrated in the US Southwest (CAISO market), with planned expansion into MISO and ERCOT, and includes wind assets in Alberta and Quebec with future MISO expansion.ย

The Manager ensures safe, reliable, and compliant operations across all assets, serves as the primary escalation point for real-time operational issues, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement within the ROC. This role is pivotal in bridging field operations, scheduling coordination, asset management, and SCADA-driven alarm management. In addition, the Manager will serve as a key contributor in the stand-up of a new ROC facility launching January 1, 2027, with significant hands-on involvement throughout the first three months of operations to ensure the center is fully staffed, operationally ready, and performing to standard.ย

Key Responsibilitiesย

1. Team Supervision & Shift Managementย

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of ROC Operators working rotating 24/7 shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.ย

  • Create and maintain shift schedules ensuring continuous coverage with no single points of failure.ย

  • Conduct regular performance reviews, one-on-ones, and skills assessments to support operator development and retention.ย

  • Establish and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), escalation protocols, and shift handover standards.ย

  • Serve as the primary escalation contact for operators during complex or high-impact operational events.ย

2. Real-Time Operations Monitoringย

  • Ensure operators actively track generation performance, equipment status, and market signals for CAISO, MISO, ERCOT, AESO, and HQEI interconnected assets.ย

  • Direct real-time responses to curtailments, forced outages, grid emergencies, and market dispatch instructions.ย

  • Ensure compliance with market rules, grid codes, and interconnection agreements across all operating jurisdictions.ย

3. SCADA Alarm Managementย

  • Oversee the team's systematic monitoring, triage, and resolution of SCADA alarms across the full asset portfolio.ย

  • Ensure alarm events are correctly classified, escalated, and documented in accordance with established alarm management procedures.ย

  • Direct operators to initiate SAP Work Orders for field technician dispatch in response to equipment alarms, faults, and performance deviations.ย

  • Review alarm logs and Work Order completion rates; identify recurring issues and drive root cause analysis efforts with O&M engineering teams.ย

  • Champion continuous improvement of alarm rationalization and suppression strategies to reduce nuisance alarms and increase operator effectiveness.ย

4. Coordination with Field Operationsย

  • Serve as the primary ROC interface with field operators and site technicians at wind, BESS, and PV facilities.ย

  • Oversee daily coordination of operations and maintenance (O&M) activities, ensuring safe system states and Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) compliance before and after field work.ย
