How much do robotics jobs pay per year?
How do robotics professionals typically collaborate with other engineering disciplines during a project?
What is the difference between Robotics vs Mechanical Engineering?
| Aspect | Robotics | Mechanical Engineering |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically requires a degree in Robotics, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; certifications in automation or control systems | Requires a degree in Mechanical Engineering; professional licensure may be preferred |
| Work Environment | Often involves working with automation systems, programming robots, and integrating hardware/software | Focuses on designing, analyzing, and manufacturing mechanical systems |
| Industry Usage | Used in automation, manufacturing, aerospace, and research | Applied across automotive, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing sectors |
Robotics and Mechanical Engineering share overlapping skills, especially in design and systems analysis. However, Robotics emphasizes automation, programming, and system integration, while Mechanical Engineering focuses on mechanical design and analysis. Both fields are vital in manufacturing and technology sectors, but Robotics professionals often work more with software and control systems, whereas Mechanical Engineers concentrate on physical components.
What are the qualifications to get a job in robotics?
The qualifications you need to get a job in robotics depend on the position you are interested in. Engineers and designers typically need a bachelor’s or master’s degree in robotics, mechanical or electrical engineering, or computer science, as well as strong programming skills. Some technicians and operators also need to have a bachelor’s degree or extensive training. Good technical and analytical skills are required for work in robotics. The duties of these positions vary significantly, although in many cases job responsibilities overlap. For example, engineers often gather advice and technical knowledge from technicians and operators about how robots function when they design new systems.

This effort presents a unique opportunity for civilians to participate in the research and development efforts that will shape future battlefield combat platforms.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement autonomous systems for ground, air, or maritime defense platforms (e.g., navigation, perception, decision-making algorithms).
- Design, integrate, and test software for robotics, AI/ML, and sensor fusion applications in contested environments.
- Design and optimize sensor fusion architecture utilizing LiDAR, radar, cameras, GPS, IMUs, and other onboard sensors.
- Develop verification and validation plans for autonomous capabilities and support system certification activities.
- Collaborate with systems, hardware, and software engineers to ensure seamless platform integration.
- Advise on platform scalability, cloud integration strategies, and continuous deployment models.
- Provides mentorship to engineers and reviews code for consistency, maintainability, and adherence to architecture.
- Support modeling, simulation, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing to validate autonomous behaviors.
- Apply computer vision, path planning, and control algorithms to enable mission execution with minimal human intervention.
- Ensure compliance with DoD standards, cybersecurity requirements, and safety-critical system guidelines.
- Conduct field testing, data collection, and performance analysis to refine autonomous capabilities.
- Conduct autonomy testing in complex off-road, contested, and GPS-denied environments.
- Develop technical documentation, briefings, and reports for government stakeholders
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and program milestones (e.g., SRR, PDR, CDR).
- Stay current with emerging technologies in artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous systems to support innovation and mission advantage.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Government Secret Clearance.
- Willingness to travel CONUS and OCONUS 25% annually.
- Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and 5-7 years experience.
