Common Search/ComparisonYesNo

Robotics Software Developers focus on programming and developing software for robotic systems, while Mechatronics Engineers work on designing and integrating mechanical, electronic, and software components. Both roles often collaborate but differ mainly in their core responsibilities and skill sets.

What are some common challenges faced by Robotics Software Developers in integrating hardware and software components?

Robotics Software Developers often encounter challenges related to ensuring seamless communication between software algorithms and diverse hardware components like sensors, actuators, and controllers. Differences in hardware specifications, real-time constraints, and debugging low-level hardware interactions can add complexity to development. Collaborating closely with hardware engineers is essential to address issues quickly and optimize system performance. Staying up to date with new frameworks and tools, such as ROS (Robot Operating System), also helps streamline integration and testing.

What does a Robotics Software Developer do?

A Robotics Software Developer designs, develops, and maintains the software that controls robotic systems. They write code that enables robots to sense their environment, make decisions, and perform tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously. These developers often work with embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to improve robot performance. Their work is essential for applications ranging from manufacturing automation to healthcare and service robots.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as C++, Python, or ROS, along with a background in computer science, engineering, or robotics. Familiarity with robotics simulation platforms (e.g., Gazebo), version control systems (e.g., Git), and experience with sensor integration and real-time operating systems are typically required. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills to excel in multidisciplinary environments. These abilities ensure reliable development, integration, and deployment of robotic systems that meet both technical and user requirements.

Job description

We are partnering with Ghost Robotics and have announced the search for a Robotics Software Engineer (Controls)
Description
Ghost Robotics is a robotics company building autonomous systems that operate in complex, dynamic environments. Our perception stack enables our robots to understand, localize, and navigate the world in real time, and we place a strong emphasis on robustness, performance, and maintainable engineering.
We are seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to design, implement, and deploy cutting-edge control algorithms for dynamic legged robotic systems operating in complex real-world environments. You will work across dynamics, optimization, state estimation, and real-time software owning both algorithmic innovation and system-level performance on hardware.
This role is ideal for engineers who thrive on high-velocity problem solving, deep technical ownership, and hands-on testing and validation.
Responsibilities
โ€ข Design, implement, and validate advanced control architectures (e.g., model-based, optimization-based, learning-augmented controllers) for agility and robustness.
โ€ข Develop, maintain, and validate state estimation and sensor fusion pipelines (IMU, joint encoders, contact/force sensing).
โ€ข Lead gait generation, footstep planning, contact scheduling, and disturbance recovery tuning.
โ€ข Perform rigorous offline and real-time testing in simulation and hardware environments.
โ€ข Debug and analyze system performance using logs, visualization tools, hardware experiments, and fleet data.
โ€ข Build automated diagnostics, analysis scripts, and tools to improve robot reliability and field performance.
โ€ข Collaborate closely with mechanical, perception, embedded, and systems teams to ensure end-to-end performance and robustness.
โ€ข Write clean, maintainable, real-time-safe code in C++ and Python.
โ€ข Mentor junior engineers and contribute to long-term architectural decisions.
Requirements
Requirements
Required Qualifications
โ€ข Strong foundations in control theory (linear, nonlinear, optimal control) with experience in legged locomotion or other dynamic systems.
โ€ข Experience with multi-body dynamics, modeling, and simulation (e.g., MuJoCo, Gazebo, Isaac Sim, PyBullet).
โ€ข Hands-on experience deploying algorithms on physical robotic systems and debugging complex hardware/software interactions.
โ€ข Proficiency in modern C++ (C++17/20) and Python for development and tooling.
โ€ข Experience with Unix/Linux environments and software engineering best practices (version control, CI/CD).
โ€ข Masters/PhD in Robotics, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
โ€ข Experience with legged or humanoid robots and real-world locomotion challenges.
โ€ข Background in whole-body control frameworks (operational space control, MPC, etc.).
โ€ข Familiarity with state estimation methodologies (EKF, factor graphs, UKF).
โ€ข Experience architecting data analysis pipelines and automated diagnostic systems.
โ€ข Publications or significant open-source contributions in robotics, controls, or estimation.
โ€ข Experience with ROS 2 and real-time middleware.
โ€ข A combination of classical control and reinforcement learning applied to robotic systems.
โ€ข Demonstrated ability to lead technical efforts and mentor junior engineers.
