What is a contract robotics engineer?

A Contract Robotics Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and programs robotic systems on a temporary or project-based basis. They typically work with companies to create automation solutions, improve manufacturing processes, or develop new robotic applications. Unlike full-time employees, contract engineers are hired for specific projects and may work with multiple clients. Their responsibilities often include hardware design, software development, system integration, and testing. This role requires expertise in robotics engineering, programming, and problem-solving to deliver efficient and innovative robotic solutions.

What types of projects and daily tasks can a contract robotics engineer expect to work on?

As a Contract Robotics Engineer, you may work on a variety of projects, such as developing robotic automation for manufacturing lines, designing mobile robot prototypes, or troubleshooting existing robotic systems. Your daily tasks could include writing and testing control software, integrating hardware components, conducting system simulations, and collaborating with cross-functional teams like mechanical engineers or project managers. Assignments are often dynamic, requiring you to quickly adapt to new technologies and workflows. This variety offers opportunities to build diverse technical skills and make impactful contributions across multiple industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract robotics engineer?

To thrive as a Contract Robotics Engineer, you should possess strong proficiency in robotics systems design, programming (such as C++, Python, or ROS), and a relevant engineering degree. Experience with CAD tools, embedded systems, control algorithms, and, optionally, certifications like Certified Robotics Programmer are valuable assets. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and adaptability help individuals excel in contractor environments where teams and projects change frequently. These skills ensure you can efficiently deliver innovative solutions, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and navigate the unique demands of contract-based work.

Join Us at a Pivotal Moment of Growth

[Doosan Robotics X ONExia] is experiencing an exciting transformation. As a leader in robotic solutions with standard products for palletizing and packaging applications using Robot Arms, we're experiencing rapid expansion and scaling our impact across industries. Our cutting-edge systemsโ€”from advanced palletizing and case packing to carton erecting and conveyor solutionsโ€”are transforming operations for companies across North America, and we need passionate engineers to fuel our next phase of growth.

[Position Overview]

We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the planning, execution, and delivery of robotic automation and manufacturing projects. This role serves as the central coordinator between engineering, operations, vendors, and clients, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget. The ideal candidate combines deep familiarity with industrial automation systems with proven project management expertise.

[Key Responsibilities]

  • Own the full project lifecycle for robotic automation deployments โ€” from requirements gathering and scoping through commissioning, validation, and handoff to operations.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans, schedules, risk registers, and budgets; proactively identify and mitigate schedule and cost risks.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams including mechanical, electrical, controls, and software engineers, as well as procurement and quality.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients and vendors during project execution, facilitating clear communication and managing expectations.
  • Oversee Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) activities, ensuring systems meet functional and safety specifications.
  • Track KPIs and project milestones; provide regular status reporting to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Manage change orders, scope changes, and contract obligations in collaboration with sales and legal.
  • Drive continuous improvement by capturing lessons learned and feeding them into process and methodology improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, ANSI/RIA R15.06) and quality standards throughout project execution.
  • Other duties as assigned

[Job Requirements]

  • 5+ years of project management experience, with at least 3 years in industrial automation, robotics, or advanced manufacturing environments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex, multi-disciplinary technical projects from concept through commissioning.
  • Proficiency with project management tools such as MS Project, Smartsheet, Celoxis or equivalent.
  • General understanding of robotic systems, PLCs, and system integration concepts.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills; ability to translate technical content for non-technical audiences.
  • PMP certification or equivalent (preferred).

[Additional Details:]

  • Location: Malvern, Pennsylvania (14 Lee Blvd, Malvern, PA 19355)
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8-hour shifts
  • Travel: 5-10% (occasional business meeting)
