What is a robotics simulator?

A Robotics Simulator job involves developing, testing, and optimizing robotic systems in a virtual environment before deploying them in the real world. Professionals in this role use simulation software to model robot behavior, analyze performance, and troubleshoot potential issues. This position is crucial in industries like automation, AI, and research, where real-world testing can be costly or unsafe. It requires expertise in robotics, physics engines, and programming languages like Python or C++.

What are the typical responsibilities of a robotics simulator on a day-to-day basis?

As a Robotics Simulator, your typical day involves designing, configuring, and running simulation tests for robotic systems to validate their performance before physical deployment. You’ll often collaborate closely with robotics engineers, software developers, and sometimes hardware teams to troubleshoot design issues and improve algorithms. Regular tasks include setting up simulation parameters, analyzing test results, documenting findings, and tuning models for optimal performance. This role requires both independent problem-solving and strong team communication to ensure robotics projects progress smoothly and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the robotics simulator position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Simulator, you need a solid background in robotics engineering, programming (such as Python or C++), and simulation software, typically backed by a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with tools like ROS (Robot Operating System), Gazebo, V-REP, or MATLAB/Simulink is highly desirable, and certifications in robotics or simulation software can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and teamwork skills are essential for success in this collaborative and dynamic field. These abilities ensure accurate, efficient simulation of robotic systems, enabling reliable testing and development before real-world deployment.

Job Type: Contract | Travel Required

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced FANUC Robot Programmer / Developer with strong KAREL programming experience to support the development, integration, and installation of advanced robotic automation systems. This position will begin at our South Carolina facility through November, where the successful candidate will develop and test robotic applications before traveling to Texas in December for final installation, startup, and commissioning.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex automation challenges, developing custom robot functionality, and working alongside controls engineers, PLC programmers, and manufacturing teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and modify FANUC robot programs using both Teach Pendant (TP) and KAREL programming.

  • Design and implement custom KAREL applications to extend robot functionality beyond standard TP capabilities.

  • Program complete robotic applications from concept through production startup.

  • Integrate robots with PLCs, HMIs, vision systems, barcode scanners, RFID readers, and other industrial peripherals.

  • Configure and troubleshoot robot communications using protocols such as:

    • EtherNet/IP

    • TCP/IP

    • PROFINET

    • Serial Communications

  • Support robot startup, commissioning, debugging, and production optimization.

  • Diagnose and resolve software, communication, and hardware issues during integration.

  • Collaborate with controls engineers, project managers, and customers throughout project execution.

  • Document programming changes, software revisions, and commissioning activities.

  • Travel to customer sites for installation and production support.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of FANUC robot programming experience in industrial automation.

  • Strong experience programming with FANUC KAREL.

  • Experience with FANUC Teach Pendant (TP) programming.

  • Ability to develop robot applications from the ground up rather than modifying existing code.

  • Experience integrating robots with PLC-controlled manufacturing systems.

  • Strong understanding of industrial networking and communications.

  • Experience troubleshooting robotic cells during startup and production.

  • Ability to read electrical drawings and robot layouts.

  • Willingness to travel and work onsite in South Carolina and Texas.

Preferred Experience

  • FANUC iRVision

  • Barcode scanner integration

  • RFID integration

  • SQL or database connectivity

  • Socket messaging

  • Background in automotive or high-volume manufacturing

  • Robot simulation experience (ROBOGUIDE or similar)
