Robotics Research Assistant information

What does a robotics research assistant do?

A Robotics Research Assistant typically supports research projects by helping design, build, and test robotic systems. They often assist with programming robots, collecting and analyzing data from experiments, and collaborating with researchers or engineers. Their responsibilities may also include conducting literature reviews, preparing reports, and maintaining laboratory equipment. This role is important in advancing robotics technology and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics research assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Research Assistant, you need a solid background in robotics, computer science, or engineering, with experience in programming languages like Python or C++ and a relevant degree. Familiarity with robotics platforms (such as ROS), simulation tools (like Gazebo or MATLAB), and data analysis software is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration and communication skills help you contribute meaningfully to research projects. These skills and qualities are vital for efficiently advancing robotics research, troubleshooting complex systems, and working successfully within interdisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by robotics research assistants during experimental testing and data collection?

Robotics Research Assistants often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting hardware malfunctions, ensuring consistent experimental setups, and managing large datasets for analysis. Because robotics experiments can be sensitive to environmental variables, maintaining repeatability and documenting procedures are crucial. Collaboration with other team members, such as engineers and programmers, is essential to quickly resolve issues and keep projects on track. Developing strong problem-solving skills and adaptability is key to overcoming these challenges and contributing effectively to research goals.

Our work helps strengthen U.S. industries, support job creation, and promote national economic growth.

At NLR, you'll find a mission-driven environment supported by state-of-the-art facilities, multidisciplinary research teams, and strong collaborations with industry, academia, and other national laboratories. We offer robust professional development opportunities, and a competitive benefits package designed to support your career and well-being.

Job Description

NLR's Materials Design and Discovery group is seeking an undergraduate or graduate intern to support the development of digital infrastructure for autonomous semiconductor processing and characterization systems. In conjunction with the DOE's METALLIC platform (https://netl.doe.gov/metallic), we are developing a closed-loop autonomous experimentation platform that integrates scientific instrumentation, data management, artificial intelligence, and workflow orchestration to accelerate the discovery and optimization of advanced semiconductor thin films.

The successful candidate will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team to build the software and data infrastructure that enables autonomous operation of advanced semiconductor synthesis and characterization instruments.

Key responsibilities include
  • Develop and maintain Python software for scientific instrument control and laboratory automation.
  • Implement APIs, communication interfaces, and messaging systems connecting distributed experimental instruments and control computers.
  • Support real-time data exchange, data management, and provenance infrastructure for autonomous experimentation workflows.
  • Assist with integration, testing, debugging, deployment, and documentation of software systems.
  • Develop tools for monitoring, logging, and visualization of experimental data and system status.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams working in semiconductor processing, materials science, robotics, and artificial intelligence.
