What is a robotics perception engineer?

Robotics Perception Engineers are professionals who specialize in enabling robots to interpret and understand their environment using sensors and data processing algorithms. They work on developing and implementing computer vision, sensor fusion, and machine learning techniques so that robots can perceive objects, people, and surroundings. Their work is crucial for applications such as autonomous vehicles, drones, industrial automation, and service robots. By improving a robot's ability to 'see' and make sense of the world, they help create safer and more effective robotic systems.

What is the difference between Robotics Perception Engineer vs Computer Vision Engineer?

AspectRobotics Perception EngineerComputer Vision Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Robotics, Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering; experience with perception algorithmsBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; strong programming skills in vision processing
Work EnvironmentRobotics labs, autonomous vehicle companies, industrial automationSoftware companies, tech startups, research labs focusing on image and video analysis
Industry UsageAutonomous vehicles, robotics, manufacturingHealthcare, security, consumer electronics, automotive

Robotics Perception Engineers focus on developing perception systems specifically for robots, integrating sensors and perception algorithms for navigation and interaction. Computer Vision Engineers primarily develop algorithms for interpreting visual data across various applications. While both roles require strong programming and understanding of perception, Robotics Perception Engineers specialize in sensor fusion and real-time processing within robotic systems, whereas Computer Vision Engineers work more broadly on image analysis and recognition tasks.

What are some common challenges faced by robotics perception engineers when integrating new sensors into autonomous systems?

Robotics Perception Engineers often encounter challenges such as sensor calibration, data synchronization, and managing varying data quality when integrating new sensors. Ensuring that sensor data is accurately aligned in time and space is crucial for reliable perception in autonomous systems. Additionally, engineers must address the complexities of fusing data from multiple modalities (like cameras, LiDAR, or radar) while optimizing processing efficiency. Close collaboration with hardware and software teams is essential to troubleshoot integration issues and achieve robust, real-time perception.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics perception engineer?

To thrive as a Robotics Perception Engineer, you need strong expertise in computer vision, sensor fusion, machine learning, and proficiency in programming languages like C++ and Python, often supported by a degree in robotics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools and frameworks such as ROS (Robot Operating System), OpenCV, and deep learning libraries, as well as experience with sensors like LiDAR and cameras, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and adaptability help set standout professionals apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for enabling robots to accurately interpret and interact with their environment, leading to robust and reliable autonomous systems.

Job description

Description

About the role We're a robotics company building autonomous systems that operate in complex, dynamic environments. Our perception stack lets our robots understand, localize, and navigate the world in real time, and we care as much about robust, maintainable engineering as we do about raw algorithm performance.ย

We're hiring a Perception Engineer to design and build the SLAM, state estimation, and computer vision our robots rely on in the field. You'll take perception algorithms from research to reliable, production-ready software, working alongside our robotics, controls, and systems engineers.ย ย

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys bridging the gap between theory and deployment, turning academic algorithms into efficient, well-engineered systems.ย

How leveling works This is one role, open at the Senior, Staff, or Lead level. The responsibilities below reflect the core of the role at every level. You don't need to decide which level fits you before applying. The selected candidate will be placed at the level commensurate with the skills, scope, and experience they demonstrate through the interview process, and the offer will align with that level. Senior and Staff are individual-contributor positions. Lead carries the same technical scope plus people-leadership responsibilities, for candidates who want them.ย

What you'll do (all levels)ย

  • Design and implement SLAM and localization systems (visual, visual-inertial, lidar, or multi-sensor)ย
  • Develop and integrate computer vision pipelines for feature extraction, tracking, mapping, and scene understandingย
  • Implement and optimize estimation algorithms (filtering and optimization-based methods)ย
  • Fuse data from cameras, IMUs, lidars, and depth sensorsย
  • Evaluate perception performance using real-world data and metricsย
  • Optimize algorithms for real-time performance and robustnessย
  • Collaborate with controls and planning teams to support downstream autonomyย
  • Maintain clean, well-tested, production-quality codeย
  • Contribute to tooling, datasets, and evaluation frameworksย

Senior Perception Engineerย ย

  • Owns a defined technical area of the perception stack and delivers independently end to endย
  • Mentors less-experienced engineersย
  • Track record of shipping perception software to real systemsย

Staff Perception Engineerย ย

  • Drives technical direction and architecture across the team's areaย
  • Sets engineering standards and multiplies the output of othersย
  • Demonstrated influence beyond their own deliverables, across teams or an entire perception stackย

Lead Perception Engineerย ย

  • Staff-level technical scope plus people-leadership responsibilities: direct reports, hiring, performance, and team planningย
  • Demonstrated ability to grow engineers and run a healthy, productive teamย

Requirements

Required qualifications (all levels)ย

  • Master's degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, plus 2+ years of relevant work experience; OR a PhD in a related field.ย
  • A strong background in robotics perception or computer vision, with hands-on experience implementing SLAM or localization in real systems. We weigh what you've built and shipped over where your degree is from. An advanced degree in Robotics, CS, EE, or a related field is one path in. Equivalent industry experience is another, and just as welcome.ย
  • Solid understanding of 3D geometry and coordinate transformations, camera models and calibration, feature-based and/or direct visual methods, and probabilistic state estimationย
  • Proficiency in C++ and/or Pythonย
  • Experience working in Linux environmentsย
  • Familiarity with robotics software stacks such as ROS / ROS 2ย
  • Strong debugging and data analysis skillsย

Preferred qualificationsย

  • Experience with SLAM frameworks such as ORB-SLAM, VINS, Cartographer, or GTSAMย
  • Lidar-based perception and mappingย
  • Familiarity with deep learning perception modelsย
  • Experience deploying perception systems on real robotsย
  • GPU acceleration (CUDA, OpenCL)ย
  • Dataset curation and annotationย
  • A graduate degree, or publications and research in robotics or computer visionย

What we offerย

  • Work on cutting-edge robotics perception problems with real-world constraintsย
  • The opportunity to own and evolve core autonomy componentsย
  • A collaborative, engineering-driven team cultureย
  • Access to real robots, real data, and real impactย
  • The anticipated starting base salary for this position is $140,000 to $185,000 per year, placed by level as described aboveย

Location ย

Philadelphia, PA. This is a full-time, on-site role. No remote candidates will be considered at this time.ย ย

Travel ย

None required, though domestic and international opportunities exist for engineers who want field exposure.ย ย

Compensation ย

Competitive base salary, full benefits, and a highly motivating equity incentive package. Flexible time off policy. We focus on output, impact, and the ability to work alongside a stellar interdisciplinary team.ย ย

Additional Information ย

Clear standard background checks are required pre-hire, post-hire, and at any time during employment. Permanent U.S. residency is required.ย ย
