Robotics Manipulation information

What is robotics manipulation?

Robotics manipulation refers to the ability of robots to interact with and physically manipulate objects in their environment. This field involves designing robotic systems that can grasp, move, and control a variety of items using sensors, actuators, and advanced algorithms. Robotics manipulation is used in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics, where robots handle tasks that require precision and adaptability. Researchers in this area focus on improving robot dexterity, perception, and autonomy to enable more complex and delicate operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics manipulation engineer?

To thrive as a Robotics Manipulation Engineer, you need expertise in robotics, mechanical engineering, and computer science, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in automation or robotics. Proficiency with programming languages like Python or C++, robotic operating systems (ROS), and simulation tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you design, test, and refine complex robotic systems effectively. These skills are crucial for developing reliable, intelligent robots that can safely and efficiently interact with their environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in robotics manipulation, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in robotics manipulation often encounter challenges such as integrating complex hardware and software systems, handling uncertainty in object recognition and grasping, and ensuring robust performance in unstructured environments. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including mechanical engineers, software developers, and AI specialists—is key to overcoming these challenges. Staying up to date with the latest research, leveraging simulation tools, and iterative prototyping can also help address common obstacles and drive innovation in this rapidly evolving field.

What is the difference between Robotics Manipulation vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectRobotics ManipulationRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, robotics certificationsComputer science or software engineering degree
Work EnvironmentHands-on with robotic hardware, labs, manufacturingSoftware development, simulation, coding
Industry UsageManufacturing, automation, researchSoftware development for robotic systems
Common Search IntentRobotics manipulation skills, hardware focusRobotics programming, software tools

Robotics Manipulation involves working directly with robotic hardware to develop and improve physical interaction capabilities, often in manufacturing or research settings. Robotics Software Engineers focus on developing the software that controls robotic systems, including algorithms and simulations. While both roles require technical skills, Robotics Manipulation emphasizes hands-on hardware work, whereas Robotics Software Engineering centers on coding and software development for robotics applications.

Job description

Are you a forward-thinking engineer, read to step into a Senior Robotics Software Engineer role with our premier client? In this position, you will shape and evolve the foundational software architectures that drive safe, dependable, and intelligent behavior across our robotic systems. You will play a central role in designing and building the underlying software platform that supports advanced functions such as kinematics, perception, sensor fusion, and control. Your work will directly enable responsive, capable robotic systems that operate alongside patients and support clinicians in real-world medical environments. This is a high-impact opportunity to work at the intersection of robotics and healthcare. And you'll be at the forefront of all of it!

What You’ll Do - Robotics of Course!

  • Own the technical direction and execution of the end-to-end robotics software stack, including planning, state estimation, sensor fusion, manipulation, whole-body control, and safety systems.
  • Develop clean, well-structured, and well-documented code that can be easily understood, extended, and maintained by others.
  • Integrate perception, planning, and control pipelines to ensure reliable robot behavior in complex, partially structured environments.
  • Design and evolve software frameworks that emphasize modularity, scalability, and reuse across multiple robot platforms and hardware configurations.
  • Partner closely with hardware, systems, product, and applications teams to define system capabilities, performance targets, and delivery milestones.
  • Set a high bar for quality, robustness, and real-time performance, especially in safety-critical contexts. Establish technical standards and development practices that balance rapid progress with long-term sustainability.
  • Contribute to and help cultivate a collaborative, high-performing engineering culture.
  • Track advances in robotics, autonomy, controls, and AI, and proactively assess opportunities to introduce new technologies where they add clear value.
  • Coach and mentor other robotics software engineers, supporting both their technical growth and career development.

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.

  • 5+ years of experience delivering production-grade robotics / automation software, ideally with real-world deployments, or equivalent experience through advanced academic work.

  • Strong depth in one or more areas such as whole-body or model-predictive control, perception and sensor fusion, motion planning, manipulation, or collision modeling.

  • Advanced proficiency in C++ and Python, with hands-on experience building and deploying complex robotic systems using ROS2.

  • Demonstrated success working across disciplines to deliver tightly integrated hardware-software systems.

  • Clear communicator with the ability to collaborate effectively and present technical concepts to senior stakeholders.

  • Deep motivation to build technology that has meaningful, real-world impact.

  • Brings energy, ownership, focus, and intrinsic drive to demanding engineering challenges.

  • Authorized to work in the United States on an indefinite basis.

Bonus Points

  • Experience delivering robotics systems in medical, manufacturing, or other semi-structured domains, ideally robotic arm applications
  • Familiarity with Medical compliance and/or medical device product development
  • Prior leadership in building and maintaining safety-critical or real-time software systems.
  • Familiarity with functional safety practices and certification.

Benefits

  • Equity: Company stock options.
  • Insurance Coverage: medical, dental, and vision insurance available
  • Unlimited PTO and a full winter shutdown
  • Relocation Assistance: Relocation assistance is available to move you near facility in the Columbus, OH area
