What does a robotics integrator do?

A Robotics Integrator is responsible for designing, programming, and implementing robotic systems into manufacturing or industrial processes. They work with clients to understand their automation needs, select appropriate robotic equipment, and ensure seamless integration with existing machinery and software. Their tasks often include troubleshooting, training staff, and providing ongoing support to optimize robotic performance. Robotics Integrators play a key role in improving efficiency, safety, and productivity in automated environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics integrator?

To thrive as a Robotics Integrator, you need a strong background in mechanical, electrical, or mechatronics engineering, along with experience in robotics programming and system integration. Familiarity with PLCs, industrial robot controllers (such as FANUC, ABB, or KUKA), CAD software, and relevant certifications like OSHA or safety training is often required. Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and adapt to evolving project needs. These skills ensure seamless implementation, troubleshooting, and optimization of robotic systems in manufacturing or industrial settings.

What are the most common challenges faced by robotics integrators during project implementation?

Robotics Integrators often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless compatibility between different hardware and software systems, managing project timelines to meet client expectations, and troubleshooting complex automation processes. Additionally, adapting solutions to fit unique client requirements and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams—including engineers, programmers, and operators—can add layers of complexity. Staying updated with rapidly evolving robotics technologies is also essential to deliver effective, future-proof solutions.

What is the difference between Robotics Integrator vs Robotics Technician?

AspectRobotics IntegratorRobotics Technician
CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Engineering, Robotics, or related fieldAssociate's degree or technical certification in robotics or automation
Work EnvironmentDesigning, programming, and integrating robotic systems in manufacturing or industrial settingsMaintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing robotic systems on the factory floor
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturers, automation companies, system integratorsFactories, production lines, automation service providers

Robotics Integrators focus on designing and implementing robotic systems, while Robotics Technicians handle maintenance and troubleshooting. Both roles are essential in automation, but they differ in responsibilities and required skills.

Job description

Position Summary:
You will help build the on-robot software stack that powers our humanoid robots in real-world industrial deployments. Working primarily in modern C++ and Python alongside experienced engineers, you'll develop and improve the onboard services, tooling, and infrastructure that tie perception, control, teleoperation, and autonomy together into a working robot. This is an early-career role for a strong software engineer eager to learn robotics from the inside-writing real code that runs on real robots, growing across the full stack, and taking on increasing ownership as you go.
Core Responsibilities:
  • On-Robot Software Development: Build and maintain onboard services and libraries in C++ and Python, with guidance from senior engineers on architecture and design.
  • Systems Integration: Help connect perception, control, teleoperation, and autonomy components into working robot behaviors, and help keep those integrations well-instrumented and reliable.
  • Tooling & Infrastructure: Contribute to the build system, test infrastructure, deployment pipelines, and developer tooling that keep the codebase productive and safe to change.
  • Observability & Data: Help extend logging, diagnostics, and the pipelines that move robot data off the robot for debugging and analysis.
  • Debugging & Field Support: Investigate and fix issues in the stack, including on real robots, and learn to harden software against the messiness of production environments.
  • Collaboration & Growth: Work closely with engineers across controls, AI, teleoperation, and hardware, learning the whole system and steadily expanding your scope.

Required Qualifications:
  • Software Engineering Foundations: Strong programming fundamentals with hands-on experience in C++ and/or Python (through internships, projects, research, or early professional work).
  • Computer Science Fundamentals: Solid grasp of data structures, algorithms, and software design.
  • Linux Proficiency: Comfort developing and debugging on Linux.
  • Eagerness to Learn Robotics: Genuine interest in robots and real-world systems, and drive to grow into a well-rounded robotics software engineer.
  • Ownership & Curiosity: Ability to take a well-scoped problem from start to finish, ask good questions, and iterate quickly.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Exposure to robotics, embedded systems, or other real-time/physical systems (coursework, projects, or internships all count).
  • Familiarity with any of: gRPC or similar RPC frameworks, Docker, CI/CD systems, or cloud services (AWS).
  • Exposure to build systems such as Bazel or CMake.
  • Experience with real-time or performance-sensitive software.
  • Personal or academic projects involving robots, hardware, or systems programming.
