What does a robotics engineer do?
What does a robotics engineer do?
A robotics engineer designs and often builds robots from their plans and ensures the correct processes are in place for the robot to run properly. They work with their clients to determine costs and design specifications, then they design software systems to control robotic systems; build, configure, and test robots; and automate processes to increase production and precision. Once the robotic system is in place, the robotics engineer helps troubleshoot any problems the clients have with the system.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics engineer, and why are they important?
What types of projects do robotics engineers typically collaborate on with cross-functional teams?
What is the difference between Robotics Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?
| Aspect | Robotics Engineer | Mechanical Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Robotics, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or related field; certifications in robotics or automation | Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license optional |
| Work Environment | Designing, testing, and programming robotic systems in labs or manufacturing settings | Designing and analyzing mechanical systems in various industries, including manufacturing, automotive, aerospace |
| Industry Usage | Robotics companies, automation firms, manufacturing | Manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, product design |
Robotics Engineers focus on designing and developing robotic systems, combining knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, working on mechanical systems across multiple industries. While both roles require engineering degrees, Robotics Engineers often need specialized skills in programming and automation. The choice depends on your interest in robotics and automation versus general mechanical system design.

About Analog Devices
Analog Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADI) is a global semiconductor leader that bridges the physical and digital worlds to enable breakthroughs at the Intelligent Edge. ADI combines analog, digital, AI, and software technologies into solutions that combat climate change, reliably connect humans and the world, and help drive advancements in automation and robotics, mobility, healthcare, energy and data centers. With revenue of more than $11 billion in FY25, ADI ensures today's innovators stay Ahead of What's Possible. Learn more at www.analog.comand on LinkedIn and X.
Analog Devices is seeking a Principal Field Robotics System Engineer to operate at the intersection of hands-on robotic system expertise, customer engagement, and platform enablement.
You will act as a system-level domain expert in the field, supporting customers from early architecture discussions through proof-of-concept (PoC), evaluation, and system support and integration, accelerating adoption of ADI technologies in real-world robotic systems.
This is a high-impact, customer-facing role focused on:
- Scaling platform and solution engagements across robotics ecosystems (OEMs, disruptors, and partners), in collaboration with ADI BUs, Sales, Software, ADI Garage, Innovation Hubs, and AI teams.
- Co-creating with customers and demonstrating value proposition
- Providing domain expertise across robotic subsystems and platforms (motion, sensing, perception, control, power)
- Accelerating customer decision cycles and drive design wins
This role supports priority segments including industrial robotics, humanoids, mobile robots, and service robotics, and is central to ADI's strategy to move up the value stack-from components to subsystems and platforms.
Success in this role requires the ability to operate across complex ecosystems, influence technical and business stakeholders, and translate platform capabilities into working PoCs that accelerate customer adoption. At its core, this role executes ADI's platforms & solutions strategy in the field-driving near-term business impact while scaling repeatable system solutions and strengthening ADI position within key robotics ecosystems.
Responsibilities- Build and integrate proof-of-concepts, demos, and reference systems that translate ADI platform capabilities into compelling system-level demonstrations, clearly showcasing performance, scalability, and customer value
- Work hands-on with robotic subsystems and platforms (motion, sensing, perception, control) aligned to real-world customer use cases
- Support system bring-up, integration, and debugging across hardware, software, and control layers
- Lead ADI Catalyst (collaboration hubs) engagements and customer co-creation activities; including workshops and boot camps
- Lead strategic platform engagements with robotics companies, disruptors, and ecosystem partners - from early concept through deployment
- Develop and apply deep expertise across key areas of technology including motion & actuation, multimodal sensing, real-time control, embedded compute / edge AI, and power systems, with considerations for functional safety
- Act as the technical bridge between customers, Sales, FAEs, and Business Units
- Provide guidance on system architecture trade-offs (system partition, performance, cost, power, scalability)
- Convert engagements into design wins and scalable opportunities across accounts
- Represent ADI through customer engagements, technical forums, and industry events
- Contribute to enablement and mentorship of FAEs and sales teams in system-level engagements
Required (Core Qualifications)
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- 5+ years of experience in robotics system, subsystem, or technology design across industry and/or academia
- Proven hands-on experience integrating robotic systems (prototype or deployed) or experience with advanced robotics (manipulation and humanoids preferred)
- Strong understanding of key robotic technologies, including motion control and actuation, multimodal sensing (IMU, force/torque, tactile, magnetic, vision, depth, audio), or real-time / embedded systems
- Experience working at the hardware-software boundary (system integration, bring-up, debugging)
- Familiarity with:
- C/C++ and/or Python
- Robotics frameworks (e.g., ROS / ROS2)
- Simulation and virtual commissioning tools (e.g., Isaac Sim/Omniverse, Gazebo, RoboDK, MATLAB)
- Exposure to AI/ML and perception systems
- Ability to support customer engagements, evaluations, and technical discussions
- Experience operating across matrixed teams (Sales, FAEs, Business Units)
- Effective communicator, able to bridge technical and commercial stakeholders, and translate customer needs into clear system requirements
Preferred Additional Qualifications
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- 10+ years of experience in robotic systems and subsystem development, including system architecture
- Experience with robotics platforms or simulation tools, for examples:
- NVIDIA (Jetson Nano, Orin NX, Orin AGX)
- Qualcomm Robotics (RB5/6, Snapdragon connectivity stack)
- AMD embedded platforms (Ryzen, Radeon, ROCm with ROS 2)
- Demonstrated track record of delivering high-quality robotic hardware and/or software systems
- Exposure to State-of-the-Art Physical AI, such as VLM/VLA, policy learning
- Experience working within robotics ecosystems (OEMs, startups, system integrators)
- Experience supporting technical workshops, demos, or customer enablement activities
Strong candidates may not meet every qualification listed. If you bring a hands-on, system mindset and relevant experience, we encourage you to apply.
