What does a robotics design engineer do?

A Robotics Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing robotic systems and components. They use principles from mechanical, electrical, and software engineering to create robots that can perform specific tasks or functions. Their work involves creating blueprints, modeling designs, selecting appropriate materials, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the robots meet performance and safety standards. Robotics Design Engineers also troubleshoot and refine prototypes, ensuring their reliability and efficiency before deployment. This role is crucial in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics design engineer?

To thrive as a Robotics Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering, usually with a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Proficiency in CAD software, programming languages like Python or C++, and experience with robotics platforms such as ROS are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork skills help set candidates apart in this field. These skills ensure the effective design, integration, and troubleshooting of advanced robotic systems for diverse applications.

What are some common challenges faced by robotics design engineers when transitioning prototypes to mass production?

Robotics Design Engineers often encounter challenges when moving from prototype development to mass production, such as ensuring component reliability, optimizing designs for manufacturability, and maintaining cost efficiency without sacrificing performance. They must collaborate closely with manufacturing teams to refine product designs, address supply chain constraints, and ensure that regulatory standards are met. Effective communication and iterative testing are essential to identify and resolve issues early, facilitating a smoother transition to large-scale manufacturing.

What is the difference between Robotics Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectRobotics Design EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering; often certifications in robotics or automationBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; professional engineering license (PE) optional)
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, robotics development facilities, manufacturing settingsManufacturing plants, design offices, research labs
Industry UsageRobotics companies, automation firms, research institutionsManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, product design
Common Search/ComparisonRobotics Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer

Robotics Design Engineers focus on creating robotic systems, integrating sensors, actuators, and control systems, often requiring knowledge of electronics and programming. Mechanical Engineers design and analyze mechanical components and systems, with a broader scope across various industries. While both roles require engineering degrees, Robotics Design Engineers typically have specialized skills in robotics and automation, making them distinct yet overlapping with Mechanical Engineers in certain projects.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Automation Robotics Engineer will provide technical support for the design, development, and implementation of automated manufacturing systems. This individual primary responsibilities include: the technical engineering of robotic software during the design, and build phase of a project; the generation of robotic software for the designed system using customer standards and known good practices; and integration and support of the equipment during runoff and after installation at the customer facility. They share the responsibility with management that all projects meet customer specifications and exceed end-user expectations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Shared responsibility with project management for performance to budget and timing during all phases of the project.
  • Understand and strictly follow the standards and specifications for the robotic simulation and/or design of robotic software for the end user.
  • Must be able to read and understand electrical drawings, pneumatic drawings, and mechanical sequences of operations and use them to write software.
  • Understand safety concepts and safety requirements to ensure proper implementation during the robotic simulation and/or software generation.
  • Write Robotic Software Programs for different types of equipment/machinery both from scratch and using customer software standards and templates.
  • Responsible for the completeness of software design prior to power on, ensuring reduced debug project phases.
  • Support manufacturing and service at the debug and installation startup phase.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to define problems, collect data, and formulate effective solutions to issues in a timely fashion.
  • Train/aid the end-user on the equipment operation as well as hardware and software architecture
  • Aid the customer and improve customer satisfaction through routine and regular communication.
  • Act as project manager on smaller projects and report to management on progress, timing, and critical issues.
  • Travel for extended periods to end-user facilities to startup, debug or support machinery.
  • Ensure the accuracy of all documentation by recording all field changes and delivering mark-ups to engineering so they are included in the final documentation provided to the customer.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university or five (5) or more years of experience in the field of robotic automation for the automotive industry strongly preferred.
  • Strong and recent background in two of the following robots: Fanuc (iR Vision), ABB, or Kuka.
  • Able to do Advanced Programming in the two robots they have the most knowledge.
  • Very proficient with Robotic Path Teaching.
  • Material Handling Applications a plus
