Job Responsibilities:

General Description

The Controls Engineer is responsible for assisting in the PLC system development and maintenance to ensure that manufacturing operations run smoothly, efficiently, and effectively, leveraging technology to drive continuous improvement and innovation.

Standard Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop, and empower team members.
  • Support compliance to Magna Standards such as MMSA, MAFACT and MQS systems.
  • Support compliance to IATF, ISO 14001 and TISAX systems.
  • Complies and upholds the expectations of internal standards, processes, and legislative requirements.
  • Conduct in accordance with the Magna Charter, Magna Operating Principles and Corporate Ethics guidelines.
  • Promotes and ensures adherence to Company, Legislative and Magna Safety practices.
  • Achieve technical confidence to challenge current standards and progress division to the next level.
  • Responsible for monitoring and improvement initiatives related to Key Operating Indicators assigned by GM.
  • Responsible to identify any potential or actual Health & Safety concerns to ensure risks are mitigated and compliance to legislation is consistently maintained at all times.
  • Support quality, safety, environmental and sustainability objectives.
  • Complete corrective and preventive actions as appropriate for any non-conformance within jurisdiction and assist with non-compliances identified during customer / internal and / or external audit.
  • Participate in the continuous improvement and cost reduction activities using problem solving methods.
  • Participate in company meetings and key events as required.
  • Responsible for ensuring adherence to daily 5S activities and cleaning schedule.
  • Work with other departments towards overall plant goals.
  • Any other requests deemed reasonable by management.

Job Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • System Development: Design & implement new electrical hardware & software applications to support operational needs including PLCs, HMIs, industrial robots, and vision systems. Provide training & support on new systems. Design & maintain reports for applications.
  • Collaboration: Liaise with cross functional teams for required inputs and assistance for projects or programs.
  • Continuous Improvement: Evaluate performance of existing systems to identify continuous improvement opportunities. Design & modify control systems as needed to accommodate production changes; Perform regular maintenance and updates on manufacturing software to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Troubleshooting: Effectively troubleshoot areas of concern with existing code with the goal of mitigating any potential impact on operational needs
  • Training: support the delivery of technical training to the maintenance and engineering teams.
  • Device Management: Program, troubleshoot and improve error proofing devices; Investigate and research new technologies and equipment for operational enhancement opportunities.
  • Compliance & Security: Ensure that manufacturing software systems comply with industry standards and regulations and implement security measures to protect sensitive data.
  • Vendor Coordination: Work with software vendors to address issues, implement updates, and ensure that the software meets the organization's operational and security requirements.
  • Records: Create and maintain documentation for software systems, including user manuals, training materials, and technical specifications in compliance with record retention requirements.
  • Team Participation: Participate in Fast Response Communication meetings / GEMBA walks as required.
  • Projects & Programs: Responsible for initiating tasks & provide data to support required deliverables for new projects or programs.
  • Support: Back up representative for department Support Staff as required

Qualifications

  • Education: A bachelor's degree or diploma in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or comparable) is preferred
  • Additional Training: Courses or training in Robotics; Project Management; Database Management; IT Security; Participation in workshops, seminars, & conferences related to manufacturing technology and software an asset.
  • Experience: 2 years in related field preferred.
  • Characteristics: Able to communicate effectively with coworkers; Effective trouble shooting; Possess leadership skills; Promotes teamwork; Instills empowerment; Ability to uphold confidentiality & integrity.
  • Technical: Knowledge / experience with of CAD / Electrical Drawings; PLC Application Software; Hardware Applications; VBA Programming; MES Systems; ERP Systems; SQL Databases; Data Integration; Cloud Computing; BI Tools; Networking; Intermediate skill level with Cognex/Keyence vision systems; Proficient Computer Skills; Automotive related knowledge an asset.

NOTE: The nature of the role requires availability during scheduled shifts & off shifts in the event of any issues
