What is mechatronics engineering?

Mechatronics engineering is an interdisciplinary field that combines mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and control systems to design and create smart machines and systems. Mechatronics engineers work on products such as robots, automated manufacturing equipment, and intelligent consumer devices. Their work involves integrating hardware and software to improve system functionality and efficiency. This field is crucial for developing innovative automation solutions in industries like automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing.

What does a mechatronics engineer do?

Mechatronics Engineers often collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to design, develop, and optimize smart systems such as robotics, automated manufacturing equipment, or precision instrumentation. Daily responsibilities may include integrating sensors and actuators, programming microcontrollers, troubleshooting electromechanical systems, and participating in design reviews. Working in a multidisciplinary environment requires strong communication skills and adaptability, as you'll frequently coordinate with team members from various engineering backgrounds to ensure seamless system integration and project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechatronics engineer?

To thrive as a Mechatronics Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, typically supported by a relevant bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with CAD software, PLC programming, robotics systems, and industry-standard simulation tools is essential, along with certifications like Certified Mechatronics Engineer (CMfgE) being advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help distinguish professionals in this multidisciplinary field. These skills are crucial for designing, integrating, and maintaining complex automated systems that drive innovation and efficiency in modern industries.

What is the difference between Mechatronics Engineering vs Electrical Engineering?

AspectMechatronics EngineeringElectrical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechatronics or related fieldBachelor's in Electrical Engineering
Work EnvironmentDesigning and integrating mechanical, electronic, and software systemsDesigning electrical circuits, power systems, and electronic devices
Industry UsageRobotics, automation, manufacturingPower generation, electronics, telecommunications

Mechatronics Engineering focuses on integrating mechanical, electronic, and software systems to develop intelligent products like robots and automation systems. Electrical Engineering primarily deals with electrical circuits, power systems, and electronic devices. While both fields share foundational knowledge and sometimes overlap, Mechatronics emphasizes system integration and interdisciplinary skills, whereas Electrical Engineering concentrates on electrical components and systems.

Do mechatronics engineers make a lot of money?

Mechatronics engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary by industry, experience, and location. Entry-level positions often start around the national average for engineering roles, with experienced professionals earning higher wages, especially those with specialized skills in robotics, automation, or control systems.

Is mechatronics engineering a good career option?

Mechatronics engineering is a multidisciplinary field combining mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering, with job opportunities in automation, robotics, and manufacturing industries. It offers a strong job outlook due to increasing automation and technological integration, and requires skills in programming, systems design, and troubleshooting. The profession often involves working with CAD software, control systems, and embedded systems, and may require relevant certifications or degrees.

Job description

The mechatronics engineer I'd be looking for would currently possess a P.Eng and is willing to use it.  Review and certify electrical drawings and schematics, be able to select components for the controls system. They'd be required to create, review and stamp the programs as well.  PLC including but not limited to, siemens, rockwell, IQAN, or at least have enough knowledge of others to be able to do this.

Would like them to be able to create comprehensive FATs, have an understanding of north american standards, know where to look for standards for other countries

Lead Mechatronics EngineerSummary

Design and develop advanced electrical, controls, and automation systems for custom industrial equipment. This is more than a design role. As a P.Eng., you will have the opportunity to shape this stable growing company's controls engineering discipline, influence engineering standards and technology decisions, and work hands-on from concept and design through PLC programming, FAT, commissioning, and customer start-up. You will collaborate closely with engineering, manufacturing, project teams, suppliers, and customers while helping mentor and develop the next generation of technical talent. If you enjoy solving complex engineering challenges, building practical automation solutions, and having a direct impact on the equipment and systems you develop, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and development of electrical, controls, and automation systems for custom industrial equipment.

  • Review, approve, and professionally seal electrical schematics, control-system designs, calculations, and related engineering documentation, as appropriate.

  • Develop, review, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI software, including Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, and other industrial platforms.

  • Design and integrate VFDs, motion control, servo systems, instrumentation, and industrial communication networks.

  • Lead and support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting activities.

  • Ensure designs comply with applicable CSA, CEC, NFPA, UL, IEC, machinery-safety standards, and customer requirements.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers, designers, and technologists.

  • Establish controls-engineering standards, best practices, templates, and processes as this company's automation capabilities grow.

  • Work directly with customers, suppliers, contractors, and internal teams to resolve technical challenges and deliver successful projects.

  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment performance, reliability, safety, automation, and engineering processes.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

  • P.Eng. and eligible to assume professional responsibility for applicable engineering work.

  • 5+ years of industrial controls, automation, electrical, or mechatronics engineering experience.

  • Strong hands-on experience with PLC programming, troubleshooting, electrical controls, HMI development, and industrial automation.

  • Experience with Siemens and/or Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC platforms.

  • Working knowledge of CSA, CEC, NFPA, UL, IEC, and machinery-safety requirements.

  • Experience with FAT, commissioning, machine startup, and field troubleshooting.

  • Experience with motion control, servo systems, VFDs, and industrial networks is an asset.

  • Strong engineering judgment, problem-solving, communication, and project-management skills.

  • A hands-on, collaborative mindset with the ability to lead technical decisions while working effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Why This Role?

Build something that matters. You will have the technical ownership, autonomy, and opportunity to help shape this stable growing company's electrical and automation capabilities while working on challenging custom industrial equipment. If you are ready to combine engineering leadership with hands-on technical work, we want to hear from you.
