Robotics Apprentice information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Apprentice, you need a foundational understanding of robotics principles, mechanical systems, and programming, often gained through coursework or technical training. Familiarity with tools like CAD software, microcontroller platforms (such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi), and basic programming languages (like Python or C++) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn make candidates stand out in this position. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively supporting robotics projects, troubleshooting issues, and growing into more advanced roles in the field.

What types of projects and hands-on tasks can a Robotics Apprentice expect to work on during their apprenticeship?

As a Robotics Apprentice, you will typically assist with assembling, testing, and troubleshooting robotic systems under the guidance of experienced engineers and technicians. Your daily responsibilities may also include programming simple robotic routines, documenting progress, and participating in team meetings to discuss project updates. Apprentices often rotate through various departments, giving you exposure to mechanical design, electronics, and software integration. This hands-on experience is invaluable for building foundational skills and understanding the collaborative nature of robotics development.

What are Robotics Apprentices?

Robotics Apprentices are individuals who are learning the skills needed to work in the field of robotics through a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction. They assist experienced robotics engineers and technicians with tasks such as assembling, programming, and testing robotic systems. This hands-on experience allows apprentices to gain practical knowledge while developing problem-solving abilities and technical expertise. The goal of a robotics apprenticeship is to prepare participants for a career in robotics or automation by providing a structured pathway to becoming a qualified professional.

What is the difference between Robotics Apprentice vs Robotics Technician?

AspectRobotics ApprenticeRobotics Technician
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; some technical training or certificationsAssociate degree or technical certification in robotics or automation
Work EnvironmentTraining sites, manufacturing plants, or labs under supervisionManufacturing facilities, maintenance workshops, or automation environments
Employer & Industry UsageEntry-level training programs in manufacturing, robotics, or automation companiesMaintenance, troubleshooting, and repair roles in industrial settings

Robotics Apprentices typically undergo training and gain foundational skills in robotics, often working under supervision. Robotics Technicians are more experienced, performing maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs in industrial environments. While apprentices focus on learning, technicians handle operational tasks, making the roles distinct yet interconnected in the robotics industry.

Job Summary

Sundt Construction is establishing a wholly owned industrial fabrication and modularization subsidiary to advance industrialized construction delivery across its portfolio. The business will provide integrated structural, mechanical, electrical, heavy plate, tank, duct, and multi-trade fabrication and modularization services. Primary markets include heavy industrial and mining, power generation and energy infrastructure, pulp and paper, water and wastewater treatment facilities, and advanced manufacturing/high-tech facilities.

In its early stages, the business will primarily support Sundt's internal construction projects through off-site manufacturing (OSM) and select third party fabrication projects for mining clients. The primary goal of our OSM work is delivering schedule certainty, enhanced safety, labor risk mitigation, and improved productivity. Over time, additional selective external growth may be pursued.

The General Manager (GM) will lead the formation, scaling, and long-term performance of this subsidiary, with full accountability for strategy, operations, Net Operating Income (NOI), capital deployment, and integration with Sundt's project delivery teams. This role includes a mandate to build a next-generation, technology-enabled fabrication platform leveraging automation, robotics, digital manufacturing systems, and Al-driven optimization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Light Structural steel fabrication and structural systems
  • Pipe racks, platforms, access systems, and equipment supports
  • Heavy industrial and large-bore piping systems
  • Process piping (ASME B31.1, B31.3)
  • High-purity and clean-room piping systems
  • Pump stations and mechanical equipment skids
  • Integrated mechanical process modules
  • Mining and materials handling assemblies

  • Custom-engineered fabricated assemblies tailored to project requirements
  • Complex one-off industrial components
  • Integrated mechanical and electrical systems
  • Factory-assembled and pre-tested process systems
  • Heavy plate rolling, forming, and welding
  • Industrial tanks and storage vessels
  • Water and wastewater process tanks
  • Mining and slurry containment structures
  • Large-scale industrial duct fabrication and assemblies
  • Custom chutes, hoppers, and material handling components
  • Pressure and non-pressure vessel fabrication (as certifications are obtained)
  • Pre-assembled electrical skids and power distribution modules
  • Motor control center (MCC) assemblies in coordination with OEMs
  • Instrumentation panels and control enclosures
  • Pre-wired equipment packages
  • Integrated mechanical/electrical process skids
  • Factory-tested modular electrical rooms
  • Integrated structural/mechanical/electrical modules
  • Transport-ready industrial modules
  • Installation-ready assemblies reducing field labor and schedule risk

  • Develop and execute a multi-year strategic roadmap aligned with Sundt's markets and growth objectives.
  • Own revenue, gross margin, Net Operating Income (NOI), and working capital performance.
  • Establish engineering and detailing functions supporting DFM and DF Mod integration.
  • Lead procurement strategy, commodity risk management, and supplier partnerships.
  • Oversee logistics planning including module transport, crane planning, and site coordination.
  • Implement advanced manufacturing systems including robotics, CNC automation, and smart factory tools.
  • Deploy ERP/MES systems, BIM-to-fabrication workflows, and digital traceability systems.
  • Leverage AI for production scheduling, predictive maintenance, quality analytics, and capacity forecasting.

Minimum Job Requirements:

1.    15+ years of leadership experience in industrial fabrication, manufacturing, or heavy industrial construction.
2.    Demonstrated ability to scale capital-intensive operations and build high-performing teams.
3.    Experience implementing automation, robotics, or advanced manufacturing initiatives.
4.    Experience serving heavy industrial, mining, power, or water/wastewater sectors.
5.    Prior P&L responsibility with accountability for Net Operating Income.
6.    Strong understanding of structural, mechanical, and electrical systems integration.
