What is robotic process automation?

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is a technology that uses software robots, or 'bots,' to automate repetitive and rule-based tasks traditionally performed by humans. RPA systems can interact with digital systems and applications to process transactions, manipulate data, trigger responses, and communicate with other systems. This automation helps organizations increase efficiency, reduce errors, and free up human workers for more complex responsibilities. RPA is widely used in industries like finance, healthcare, and customer service to streamline operations and cut costs.

What is a robotic process automation job?

Robotic process automation (RPA) is the technical design or training of a software robot or artificial intelligence (AI) entity to code, develop, configure, and test software, often to replace individual software developers. The responsibilities of an RPA professional may be to consult with businesses or clients to develop process automation procedures. There are also technical design jobs where duties are to write code to create an AI or software robot that can perform automated processes or tasks, such as working in a scripting language to create components for a larger programming job. Qualifications often include a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, statistics, engineering, or a closely related field as well as experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotic process automation specialist?

To thrive as a Robotic Process Automation Specialist, you need expertise in process analysis, workflow design, and proficiency in programming or scripting languages, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with leading RPA platforms such as UiPath, Blue Prism, or Automation Anywhere, and certifications in these tools, are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These capabilities are essential for designing efficient automation solutions, ensuring seamless integration, and maximizing business productivity.

How does a robotic process automation specialist typically interact with business stakeholders and IT teams during an RPA project?

As an RPA specialist, you will regularly collaborate with business stakeholders to understand their workflows and identify automation opportunities. You'll also work closely with IT teams to ensure that automation solutions are secure, scalable, and comply with company standards. Effective communication skills are essential, as you'll need to translate technical possibilities into business value, gather feedback, and coordinate testing and deployment. This collaborative environment helps ensure that RPA solutions genuinely address business needs and are smoothly integrated into existing systems.

What is the difference between Robotic Process Automation vs Business Analyst?

AspectRobotic Process AutomationBusiness Analyst
Primary RoleDesigning and implementing automation solutions to streamline processesAnalyzing business needs and defining requirements for projects
Required SkillsProgramming, scripting, process mappingData analysis, communication, process modeling
Work EnvironmentIT teams, automation labs, software development settingsBusiness units, project teams, consulting environments
CertificationsRPA certifications (UiPath, Automation Anywhere)CBAP, PMI-PBA, business analysis certifications

While Robotic Process Automation specialists focus on creating automation solutions to improve efficiency, Business Analysts concentrate on understanding business needs and defining project requirements. Both roles often collaborate but serve different functions within an organization.

How to get into robotic process automation?

To enter the field of robotic process automation (RPA), develop skills in programming languages such as Python or Java, and learn RPA tools like UiPath, Automation Anywhere, or Blue Prism. Gaining certifications in these platforms and understanding business processes can improve job prospects in RPA roles.

Is robotic process automation still in demand?

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) professionals are in high demand as organizations seek to improve efficiency and reduce costs through automation. Skills in RPA tools like UiPath, Automation Anywhere, and Blue Prism, along with programming knowledge, enhance job prospects in this growing field.

Job description

Amazon Web Services' Hardware Engineering team is looking for experienced professionals to help build the world's premier cloud computing platform. The Manufacturing Automation Design & Engineering team designs, validates, and deploys automation solutions, including robotics, cobots, vision inspection, AI-powered quality systems, and automated assembly workflows, across contract manufacturer sites worldwide.
About the Role: You will own end-to-end automation process engineering for the X86/G-Series/ESH platform families. This includes defining automated assembly sequences, specifying robotic cell requirements, developing process validation protocols, and driving automation deployment at contract manufacturer sites for these high-volume platforms

You serve as the single-threaded owner for all automation decisions affecting X86/G-Series/ESH production, working with central engineering specialists (robotics, vision, controls, mechanical) to apply their capabilities to your platform's unique requirements. These platforms represent the highest production volumes, making automation ROI and scalability paramount. You work closely with the Product Design vertical (Hardware Engineering) to manage automation requirements, participate in design reviews, and provide feedback on assembly compatibility for the X86 platform family.

You serve as the point of contact for automation during New Product Introduction (NPI), supporting the product design team in transitioning new X86 designs from prototype to production-ready automated assembly, ensuring automation readiness is built into the NPI process from the earliest stages. You also partner with the Manufacturing Process Quality vertical to define quality verification requirements, validate process capability, and ensure automation solutions meet quality targets before production sign-off.
The scope covers all server and rack assembly across all architectures and platforms, including compute, AI/ML accelerators, storage, and networking. The team designs intelligent, predictive-analytics-driven production systems where every station is sensor-driven, AI-optimized, and self-correcting, turning assembly lines into programmable, data-generating platforms that scale capacity without scaling headcount

This role requires the engineer to operate in a fast-paced, multi-platform international manufacturing environment with travel to contract manufacturer sites (up to 25-30% travel anticipated).
Key job responsibilities
Own automation process specifications for X86/G-Series/ESH platform assembly operations
Define automated assembly sequences and station allocations for high-volume X86 platform operations
Develop and execute process validation protocols for automated stations on X86 lines
Drive automation deployment and ramp at contract manufacturer sites for the X86/G-Series platform
Identify automation opportunities specific to X86/G-Series architecture and drive business case development
Coordinate with central engineering specialists to apply robotic, vision, and controls solutions to platform needs
Own platform-specific automation KPIs: throughput, quality yield, automation rate, and cycle time targets
Track platform automation KPIs and drive continuous improvement for highest-volume product lines
Collaborate with Manufacturing Process Quality to define quality verification requirements and validate process capability for automated stations
Serve as the automation point of contact during NPI, supporting product design teams in transitioning new X86 designs to production-ready automated assembly
Partner with Hardware Engineering (Product Design vertical) to manage automation requirements and participate in design reviews for new X86 configurations
About the team
About the team: The Manufacturing Automation Design & Engineering team is building a centralized automation Center of Excellence that owns the process specification and IP for how AWS hardware gets assembled. The team is responsible for engineering, defining automated process requirements, designing and proving solutions at proof-of-concept, and maintaining AWS-owned intellectual property that scales globally. The team works within a collaborative framework across Hardware Engineering (product design for automation), Manufacturing Automation Design & Engineering (process specification and validation), and Manufacturing Operations (deployment and scaling), ensuring automation is engineered once, proven once, and deployed everywhere.
