What is a Robot Operating System job?

A Robot Operating System (ROS) job involves working with the ROS framework to develop, test, and implement robotics applications. Professionals in these roles typically work with ROS libraries, create robot simulations, integrate sensors and actuators, and optimize algorithms for autonomous systems. These jobs are common in industries like automation, healthcare, logistics, and defense. Strong programming skills in Python or C++, along with knowledge of robotics principles, are usually required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Robot Operating System position, and why are they important?

To excel in roles involving the Robot Operating System (ROS), professionals need strong programming skills (especially in C++ and Python), knowledge of robotics principles, and familiarity with ROS architecture. Experience with simulation tools like Gazebo, version control systems such as Git, and, ideally, certifications in robotics software enhance a candidate's qualifications. Effective problem-solving, teamwork, and clear communication are critical soft skills for success in robotic development environments. These abilities enable efficient development, troubleshooting, and collaboration in the rapidly evolving field of robotics.

What are common challenges faced when working with the Robot Operating System (ROS)?

Professionals working with ROS often encounter challenges such as integrating hardware with diverse software packages, debugging complex robotic systems, and staying current with frequent updates to the ROS framework. Teams also need to collaborate closely to manage dependencies and ensure all components of the system communicate smoothly. You may frequently troubleshoot issues related to sensor calibration, real-time data processing, and multi-robot coordination. Overcoming these challenges builds expertise and contributes to more robust and innovative robotic solutions.

Vecna Robotics

Waltham, MA

Job description

Robotics Software Engineer
Vecna Robotics is an intelligent flexible material handling automation company that keeps goods moving. With award-winning technology engineered for uninterrupted work between autonomous mobile robots, labor, and systems, we make business go. As a company, we are driven by the same collective vision: an uninterrupted and highly efficient global supply chain where robots do the dirty work and people do the human work.
Vecna Robotics seeks a robotics software engineer to develop robotic software and embedded systems that can reliably perform complex tasks in dynamic warehouse environments. You will help design, integrate, test, deploy, and maintain new machine intelligence functionality across our fleet of robots.
The ideal candidate is curious and excited about focusing on improving robot performance at customer sites. That means working directly with data streaming from deployed robots, diagnosing issues remotely, shipping improvements, and pushing updates to robots in the field. Our team culture is built on a fast, data-driven iteration loop — learn fast, improve fast, measure the results.
This is a full-time, salaried position based in Waltham, MA reporting to the Senior Robotics Software Engineer Manager. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time. We do not accept applications or inquiries from recruitment agencies or search firms for this position.

In this role, you will:
  • Develop new features and improvements for our fleet of autonomous pallet jacks, forklifts, and tuggers
  • Write software across the robotics stack — localization, perception, computer vision, navigation, and simulation — within our ROS 1-based system
  • Work directly with data from deployed customer sites to triage and debug issues on live robots
  • Own the full improvement loop: identify the problem, build the fix, deploy it to robots in the field, and validate it using real data
  • Partner closely with teammates across the various engineering teams to tackle hard problems together
  • Be proactive in suggesting improvements, solving problems, and escalating risks.
What we are looking for:
  • 2+ years’ experience (class projects not included) with a BS, or some experience with an MS in Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical, or relevant engineering degree.
  • Software development experience in one or more of the following areas: robotic sensing, motion planning, localization, human-robot interaction, manipulation, machine learning
  • Experience with embedded software development, including testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Comfort with data and metrics — you know how to measure whether something actually got better
  • Experience in at least C++ or Python.
  • Testing or development experience with simulation tools like Gazebo, Unity or Isaac Sim
  • Hands-on time with real sensing hardware — LiDAR, cameras, IMUs
  • Strong analytical reasoning, organizational, communication, and prioritization skills.
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System) and Linux are a plus.
  • Experience with mobile robots or AMRs in production or customer-facing environments is a plus
  • Exposure to ML or computer vision frameworks is a plus
  • Willing to work in our Waltham, MA office at least 3 days a week
We are an equal opportunity employer. We encourage and celebrate diversity.
