Special Education Teacher


Job Summary:

Works under the direction of the school principal to provide and plan for specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Work well with students with disabilities, teachers and parents/guardians of students with disabilities.
  • Provide both direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and general education teachers.
  • Develop and implement annual Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education and transition needs, instructional goals, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
  • Coordinate the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
  • Demonstrate specialized knowledge of teaching students with IEPs.
  • Collect instructional data on student performance to improve student outcomes and direct instruction.
  • Interpret both formal and informal classroom-based assessment results to guide instructional decisions.
  • Administer and interpret formal assessments as appropriate.
  • Utilize positive reinforcement and behavior strategies to instruct students in appropriate behaviors.
  • Provide direction, and supervision for all paraeducators assigned to the classroom.
  • Compile and maintain thorough, accurate and compliant special education files.
  • Maintain student confidentiality.
  • Work cooperatively as a member of the educational team.
  • Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance and responsible use of leave.
  • Follow professional ethics in all work
  • related activities.
  • Comply with all school, district, state and federal guidelines and Roane County Board of Education policies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid TN Teachers License with appropriate endorsement code.
  • Position entails standing, walking, bending, stooping, and possible physical interventions to maintain a safe learning environment. The position may require assisting with lifting, moving or positioning students and/or changing diapers as needed.
