What is an RNA-Seq?

An RNA-Seq job typically involves analyzing transcriptomic data generated from RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) experiments. Professionals in this role use bioinformatics tools to process raw sequencing data, perform quality control, map reads to a reference genome, and quantify gene expression. They may also conduct differential expression analysis, pathway enrichment studies, and visualization of results. This job often requires expertise in programming languages like Python or R, as well as familiarity with sequencing technologies and statistical methods.

What does an RNA-Seq do?

Daily tasks in an RNA-Seq role often include preparing and sequencing RNA samples, performing quality checks on raw data, and using specialized software to analyze and interpret gene expression profiles. In addition, you may collaborate closely with researchers and lab technicians to design experiments and validate findings. Regular responsibilities can also involve troubleshooting technical issues and documenting workflows for reproducibility. This role requires flexibility as project needs and technologies continue to evolve, offering dynamic opportunities to learn and contribute to cutting-edge research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the RNA Seq position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an RNA-Seq role, you need a strong background in molecular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics, typically supported by a degree in life sciences or related fields. Proficiency in tools such as Illumina sequencing platforms, FASTQC, STAR, and data analysis packages like R or Python is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills in this position. These abilities ensure accurate sequencing, data interpretation, and effective collaboration on genomic research projects.

Job description

About Sailย

Sail Biomedicines is pioneering the integrative design and deployment of fully programmable medicines to transform patient care. Sail's platform combines first-in-class programmable circular RNA technology (Endless RNA orย eRNA), and an industry-leading platform of programmable nanoparticles,ย utilizingย natural components, to unlock comprehensive programming of medicines for the first time. Byย leveragingย cutting-edgeย eRNAย and nanoparticle deployment technology, Sail is also making unparalleled use of AI techniques toย identifyย and design fully programmable medicines that are potent, targeted, versatile, and tunable. Sail was founded by Flagship Pioneering.ย

The Role

The Scientist, Platform RNA Sciences, will work on key projects to advance Sail's first-in-class programmable circular RNA technology (Endless RNA or eRNA). This role works cross-functionally to perform hypothesis-driven experiments and high-throughput screens to improve our eRNA designs, with the goal to maximize circularization, and enhance RNA stability and translation. The successful candidate is self-motivated, curious and creative, thinks outside of the box and has a can-do mindset. The team looks forward to helping you strive in this exciting and fast-paced environment to make a real-world impact on patients' lives.

Responsibilitiesย

  • Conceive and conduct pooled and array screens to improve our eRNA designs, enabling higher product purity and function
  • Design hypothesis-driven experiments based on state-of-the-art RNA biology to refine our eRNA designs
  • Evaluate and develop alternative circularization strategies
  • Determine circularization efficiency and impurity levels by running analytic assays
  • Design properly controlled experiments, generate high-quality data, and run rigorous statistical analysis
  • Maintain detailed documentation in electronic lab notebooks
  • Author standard operating procedures (SOPs), study summaries, and technical reports
  • Present findings clearly in oral or written formats to internal and external stakeholders to enable alignment and decision-making

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field, or M.S. with 6+ years of focused, full-time research experience in RNA technologies
  • Strong background in RNA biology with demonstrated skillset in relevant molecular and biochemical techniques, such as in vitro transcription (IVT), RNA purification, oligo-dT purification, column chromatography, capillary gel electrophoresis, RT-qPCR, RNA-seq, Nanopore sequencing
