What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a rig welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rig Welder, you need proficiency in welding techniques, blueprint reading, and safety procedures, typically supported by a welding certification and relevant field experience. Familiarity with welding equipment, inspection tools, and industry standards such as AWS or ASME codes is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong teamwork skills help set top performers apart in this demanding environment. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, high-quality work under challenging conditions, critical for the integrity of structures and project success.

What is a rig welder?

Rig welders are skilled professionals who specialize in welding tasks on oil rigs, pipelines, and other industrial construction sites, often in remote or offshore locations. They are responsible for creating and repairing metal structures, ensuring the integrity and safety of equipment used in oil and gas extraction. Rig welders must be proficient in various welding techniques, such as arc welding and TIG welding, and must adhere to strict safety standards. The job can be physically demanding and may require working long hours in challenging environments.

What is the difference between Rig Welder vs Pipe Welder?

AspectRig WelderPipe Welder
CertificationsWelding certifications (e.g., ASME, AWS)Welding certifications (e.g., ASME, AWS)
Work EnvironmentOffshore rigs, oil & gas platforms, construction sitesPipeline construction, refineries, industrial plants
Industry UsageOil & gas, energy, constructionOil & gas, utilities, manufacturing

Both Rig Welders and Pipe Welders require similar welding certifications and often work in the oil & gas industry. However, Rig Welders typically work offshore on rigs and platforms, while Pipe Welders focus on pipeline and industrial pipe systems. The roles are closely related but differ mainly in work environment and specific job tasks.

What does a rig welder do?

A Rig Welder is a key player in the oil industry. Rig Welder work on oil rigs--large platforms erected to carry out oil drilling, processing, and storage--and use specialized equipment to weld metals on the rig. Rig Welders are vital in reinforcing the infrastructure necessary to extract and process oil and, in many cases, natural gases. Rig Welders also construct pipes, bond metals to create beams, vessels, and pipes, and ensure the proper use, maintenance, and storage of welding equipment.

What are the common challenges faced by rig welders when working on remote job sites?

Rig welders often encounter challenges such as harsh weather conditions, limited access to resources, and extended periods away from home when working on remote job sites. Adapting to changing environments and maintaining safety standards under physically demanding conditions are crucial aspects of the role. Effective communication with other crew members and the ability to troubleshoot equipment issues quickly are also key to success in these settings. Despite these challenges, many rig welders find the work rewarding due to the variety of projects and opportunities for overtime.

Job description

Company Overview:

MP Materials (NYSE: MP) is rebuilding American industrial capability for a new era of autonomy, robotics, and electrification.

We are the only U.S. company with a fully integrated rare earth supply chain—from mining and refining to advanced metal and magnet manufacturing. Our products include both the critical materials used to make permanent magnets and the finished magnets themselves—enabling next-generation technologies in robotics, automation, aerospace, transportation, defense, and energy systems. These materials are the foundation of physical AI—the convergence of computation, movement, and control.

We hire ambitious, mission-driven people who want to tackle complex challenges and shape the future of strategic industries. Our culture is rooted in teamwork, resiliency, and integrity, with a deep commitment to operational excellence and national purpose. MP is rapidly evolving from a materials producer into a leading U.S. manufacturer—and our people are driving that transformation.

Position Overview:

The Fabricator/Welder builds, fits, and installs structural fabrications, equipment frames, guards, platforms, and process piping that support magnet manufacturing operations. This role partners closely with Engineering to interpret drawings, prototype new designs, and deliver high-quality, reliable fabrications on schedule. Success in this role requires expert layout and fit-up, proficiency in multiple welding processes (GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, SMAW; FCAW a plus), strong pipefitting skills, and a relentless commitment to safety and craftsmanship.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate structural components (skids, frames, mezzanines, platforms, handrails, machine guards) from plate, tube, angle, and channel.
  • Perform pipefitting and welding on carbon and stainless-steel process lines (butt weld, socket weld, threaded); cut, bevel, prep, fit, and support piping to spec.
  • Read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, isometrics, and P verify dimensions and tolerances before and during build.
  • Execute welding using GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, and SMAW across all positions; select consumables, set parameters, and control heat input to meet quality requirements.
  • Conduct layout and fit-up using jigs/fixtures, squares, precision levels, lasers, and measuring tools to achieve precise alignment.
  • Cut and form material using oxy-fuel and plasma cutting, band saws, ironworker, press brake, shear, rollers, notchers, and grinders.
  • Perform in-process and final quality checks (visual inspection, dimensional verification); coordinate NDE as required; complete rework to standard.
  • Collaborate with Engineering on prototyping and new builds; provide manufacturability feedback, redline drawings, and suggest design improvements.
  • Rig, move, and install fabrications safely; operate forklifts and overhead cranes; follow proper rigging and signaling practices.
  • Maintain welding/fabrication equipment; perform basic troubleshooting and preventative maintenance on shop tools.
  • Complete documentation: redlines, weld maps, material heat/lot traceability (when required), and work order updates; record time and materials in SAP CMMS.
  • Follow all safety policies including LOTO, hot work permitting, ventilation, confined space protocols, and PPE; actively participate in 5S and housekeeping.
  • Support planned outages, turnarounds, and urgent repairs; respond to priority work requests to minimize downtime.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, 4+ years of industrial fabrication/welding experience in a manufacturing, maintenance, or shop environment.
  • Proficiency in GTAW/TIG (stainless and carbon) and GMAW/MIG; SMAW required; FCAW experience is a plus.
  • Strong blueprint reading skills including weld symbols; ability to work from isometric drawings and basic P&IDs.
  • Demonstrated pipefitting ability (takeoffs from isos, offsets, fit-up, and support installation) to meet quality/tolerance requirements.
  • Competent with layout math and precision measurement tools (tape, calipers, squares, angle finders, levels, lasers).
  • Safe operation of forklifts, overhead cranes, and common fabrication tools; ability to obtain/maintain certifications.
  • AWS D1.1 (structural steel) and/or AWS D1.6 (stainless) certifications; ASME Section IX qualifications for pipe a plus.
  • Experience with sanitary tubing/orbital TIG, vacuum or high-purity gas systems, or cryogenic piping components.
  • Experience building jigs and fixtures; basic machining (sawing, light mill/lathe ops) for fit-up.
  • Familiarity with GD ability to interpret tolerance stacks in drawings.
  • Experience collaborating directly with engineers/designers; comfortable giving manufacturability feedback and executing redlines.
  • Prior use of CMMS (SAP preferred) for work orders, time, and parts tracking; ability to read bills of material (BOMs).
