What is a riding crew?

A Riding Crew job involves working on ships or offshore structures while they are in operation. Crew members perform maintenance, repairs, and inspections without requiring the vessel to dock. This role is crucial for minimizing downtime and ensuring the safety and efficiency of the equipment. Riding crews often travel internationally and must adapt to various working conditions at sea.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the riding crew position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Riding Crew member, you need practical experience in rigging, securing cargo, and safely operating on moving vessels or vehicles, often supported by safety training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with equipment such as harnesses, lashings, and radio communication systems is typically necessary. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to follow instructions precisely are essential soft skills for this position. These skills ensure the safety of the crew and cargo while maintaining smooth operations in challenging and dynamic environments.

What kind of work schedule and environment can I expect as a riding crew member?

Riding Crew members often work non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends, or extended shifts, depending on the transportation schedules and operational needs. The work environment can vary, but it commonly involves travel on ships, trains, or trucks, and may require spending significant time away from home. Teamwork is crucial as you'll interact closely with other crew members to ensure safety and efficiency. While the role can be physically demanding and requires attention to safety protocols, it offers opportunities for hands-on learning and advancement into supervisory or specialized technical roles over time.
