What is an RFID consultant?

RFID consultants are professionals who specialize in the implementation, integration, and optimization of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology within organizations. They assess client needs, recommend appropriate RFID solutions, help design system architecture, and oversee deployment to ensure efficient tracking, inventory management, and data collection. These consultants also provide training and ongoing support to maximize the benefits of RFID systems and ensure a smooth transition for businesses adopting this technology.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an RFID consultant?

To thrive as an RFID Consultant, you need expertise in radio-frequency identification technologies, systems integration, and a relevant degree in engineering, IT, or a related field. Familiarity with RFID middleware, hardware, network protocols, and often certifications like CompTIA RFID+ are typically required. Strong problem-solving, client communication, and project management skills help set top consultants apart. These competencies are essential for designing, implementing, and optimizing RFID solutions that meet clients' business needs effectively.

What challenges do RFID consultants face when integrating RFID systems into business operations?

As an RFID Consultant, a frequent challenge is ensuring seamless integration of RFID hardware and software with a client's current systems and workflows. This often involves addressing compatibility issues, managing data accuracy, and minimizing disruptions during deployment. Consultants must also collaborate closely with IT teams, operational staff, and third-party vendors to customize solutions that fit unique business needs. Effective communication, project management, and technical troubleshooting are essential to overcome these challenges and deliver a successful RFID implementation.

Reporting directly to the Director, RFID Technical Sales (Walmart Enterprise), the Technical Sales Manager acts as the critical bridge between Avery Dennison's technical and product innovation capabilities and the end customer's operational reality. By actively listening to customer pain points, conducting deep technical discovery, and educating stakeholders, this role transforms simple compliance mandates into scalable, value-driven enterprise RFID deployments.
Key Responsibilities:
  • On-site/hybrid status: On-site/hybrid model based in Bentonville, AR.
  • Consultative Technical Sales & Discovery: Serve as the lead technical authority, educating Walmart, Sam's Club, and supplier engineering/operations teams on RFID capabilities, ARC specifications, and digital identification capabilities while conducting deep-dive discovery sessions to uncover high-ROI use cases beyond basic mandate compliance.
  • Commercial Partnership & Revenue Generation: Partner side-by-side with the Strategic Account Manager (SAM) to co-develop enterprise account strategies, lead technical sales engagements, and take end-to-end ownership of the technical sales lifecycle to accelerate the transition from pilot phase to enterprise-wide rollout.
  • Value Quantification: Co-create proof-of-concept (PoC) frameworks and technical business cases that demonstrate measurable ROI, enabling the commercial team to expand adoption and close revenue opportunities.
  • Voice of the Customer: Act as the primary feedback loop between customer field operations and internal Avery Dennison teams-including Product Line Management (PLM), R&D, and Innovation-to influence future product roadmaps.
  • Ecosystem Orchestration & Deployment Quality: Build and maintain technical alignment across converter networks, chip vendors, and hardware integrators while working with cross-functional teams to ensure inlay placement, read-rate performance, and system integration meet stringent standards prior to deployment.

Qualifications
  • Experience: 5-8+ years of technical pre-sales, technical account management, or solution engineering experience, specifically driving complex RFID, IoT, sensor, or automated supply chain solutions.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep subject matter expertise in UHF RFID, sensor technologies, ARC testing protocols, tag placement dynamics, and software/data platform integration.
  • Consultative Sales Mindset: Demonstrated track record of working in a paired sales model (Commercial + Technical) with a proven ability to listen, educate, and articulate technical value to business stakeholders.
  • Ecosystem & Retail Knowledge: Strong familiarity with large-scale retail supply chains, manufacturing processes, and enterprise ecosystems (Walmart/Sam's Club experience is strongly preferred).
  • Solution Architecture: Proven ability to translate complex customer operational requirements into end-to-end technical solutions, including inlay design selection, placement guidelines, hardware/software requirements, and integration partners.
