Rf Tester information

What is an rf tester?

An RF Tester is responsible for testing and analyzing radio frequency (RF) components, devices, and systems to ensure they meet performance and quality standards. They use specialized testing equipment to measure parameters like signal strength, frequency, and interference. RF Testers work in industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, and manufacturing to ensure products function correctly. Their duties may include troubleshooting, data collection, and collaborating with engineers to resolve technical issues.

What does an rf tester do?

As an RF Tester, your day-to-day responsibilities will include setting up and calibrating RF test equipment, conducting tests on radio frequency devices or systems, documenting results, and troubleshooting issues or failures. You'll collaborate closely with design engineers and production teams to validate product performance and identify areas for improvement. The role often requires working in a laboratory or manufacturing environment, maintaining precise records, and sometimes contributing to the development of testing procedures. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on technical work, problem-solving, and being part of a cross-functional team.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an rf tester?

To thrive as an RF Tester, you need a solid background in RF engineering or electronics, with strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, often supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and signal generators, along with relevant industry certifications like ISTQB or vendor-specific credentials, is highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for success. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate testing, timely detection of faults, and seamless team coordination to deliver reliable RF products.

The ideal candidate is a hands‑on engineer with a passion for solving complex RF problems, advancing innovative technologies, and supporting mission‑critical solutions for defense and aerospace applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the design and development of state‑of‑the‑art, RF/microwave receivers, frequency‑converters and related products for SIGINT, EW and radar applications.
  • Participate in the design, analysis, integration, and test of RF/microwave circuitry operating through at least 18 GHz using SMT components and PCB substrates.
  • Assist in requirements analysis, frequency planning, and subsystem‑level architecture development under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Contribute to the development of high‑performance RF systems with challenging requirements for bandwidth, dynamic range, noise figure, etc.
  • Serve as an individual RF/MW design contributor and support engineer for key design projects.
  • Support schematic capture, simulations, PCB layout review, integration, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Perform RF testing, data analysis, and documentation of design results.
Required Qualifications

  • Experience performing top‑level requirements analysis and design of system architecture, allocating functional requirements for sub‑assemblies.
  • Experience in design of RF/MW circuitry through at least 18 GHz using SMT components on PCB substrates.
  • Hands‑on design experience in PCB‑based design of RF/MW circuitry supporting receivers and frequency converters to 18 GHz and beyond.
  • Familiar with receiver/frequency converter system design, including frequency planning and spur analysis, RF/MW filter technologies, cascade GNIP analysis, MW mixers, frequency generation using PLL ICs, and design trade‑offs.
  • Must be able to work as an individual contributor as well as with a diverse group of engineering disciplines.
  • Candidate must be familiar with computer design tools including Keysight Genesys, OrCad, MATLAB, PSPICE, or other tools.
  • Must have the ability to obtain security clearance.
  • Must be able to pass a pre‑employment drug screening and background check.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Wide bandwidth, high dynamic range, super‑het receiver design experience is desired. Additionally, experience in mmW frequency range design, wideband digitization, and low SWaP design is helpful.

Salary Range: $105,000.00 – $125,000.00 per year.
