How much do rf software engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 26, 2026, the average yearly pay for rf software engineer in Texas is $137,441.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $111,800.00 and $161,200.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RF Software Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, strong programming abilities (often in C/C++ or MATLAB), and a thorough understanding of radio frequency theory. Familiarity with RF simulation tools (like ADS or HFSS), test equipment, and possibly certifications such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license can be highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and translating technical requirements. These skills are crucial for developing reliable RF systems, troubleshooting issues efficiently, and ensuring successful integration and performance of wireless technologies.

What are RF Software Engineers?

RF Software Engineers are professionals who develop, test, and optimize software that interacts with radio frequency (RF) hardware and systems. They work on technologies such as wireless communications, radar, satellite systems, and IoT devices, ensuring that software controls and manages RF signals effectively. Their responsibilities often include designing algorithms for signal processing, integrating software with hardware, and troubleshooting RF performance issues. They typically have expertise in both software engineering and RF principles, and may work closely with hardware engineers to create robust wireless solutions.

What is the difference between Rf Software Engineer vs Rf Hardware Engineer?

AspectRf Software EngineerRf Hardware Engineer
Primary FocusDeveloping and testing software for RF systemsDesigning and testing RF hardware components
Required SkillsProgramming, RF protocols, software developmentCircuit design, RF hardware, soldering
Work EnvironmentSoftware labs, development teamsHardware labs, manufacturing facilities
Common CertificationsNone specific, often software certificationsRF engineering certifications (e.g., FCC, CE)

Rf Software Engineers focus on developing software solutions for RF systems, while Rf Hardware Engineers design and test RF hardware components. Both roles are essential in RF product development but differ in their technical focus and work environment.

What are some common challenges RF Software Engineers face when integrating software with hardware components?

RF Software Engineers often encounter challenges ensuring smooth communication between software systems and RF hardware, such as signal integrity issues, timing mismatches, and hardware-software compatibility. Debugging these issues requires close collaboration with hardware engineers and a deep understanding of both RF principles and embedded software. Additionally, working within tight performance constraints and regulatory requirements can add complexity to the integration process. Overcoming these challenges is a key part of the role and offers valuable opportunities for problem-solving and professional growth.

Job description

RF SOFTWARE ENGINEER (STARLINK)

Starlink believes in providing fast, reliable internet to serve populations with little or no connectivity. We design, build, launch, and operate the world's largest constellation of satellites, enabling us to operate a global internet network unbounded by traditional ground infrastructure limitations. Starlink also designs, builds, and delivers high-volume consumer hardware that allows users to connect to these satellites within minutes of unboxing, as well as our advanced gateways that we deploy regionally throughout the world. The root of SpaceX's success so far lies in our mission to keep all engineering and production in-house, which enables a tight feedback loop, nimble decision-making, and speedy deliverables. With millions of daily users worldwide already online, Starlink is truly a game-changer and levels the playing field for those who were previously unconnected.

As an RF software engineer in the Starlink program, you will work with a team of RF engineers, DSP engineers, software engineers, hardware engineers, and end users to design and build RF capabilities for proliferated communications and remote sensing in low earth orbit. You will work in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment, where we are exploring unsolved problems and applying the SpaceX mindset of iterating rapidly to go from design and demo to operational capability at lightning pace.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drive program-level decisions on RF system designs
  • Research novel solutions for unique large-scale satellite RF systems
  • Design, build, validate, and automate RF test benches for full characterization of custom RF designs, often involving vector network analyzers (VNA), vector signal generators (VSG), vector signal analyzers (VSA), spectrum analyzers, load pulls, RF power meters, high-speed oscilloscopes, and other common lab equipment
  • Design and build modular, scalable RF test infrastructure and test automation sequences in Python and C++ to support design validation, qualification, and production
  • Work in close collaboration with hardware, FPGA, DSP, and software engineers to design and validate RF systems
  • Create electromagnetic simulation models of hardware to design and evaluate performance

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or other engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of professional development experience in C/C++ or Python
  • 1+ years of professional experience with radio test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, vector signal analyzers, vector signal generators, and network analyzers
  • 1+ years of professional RF experience with antennas or communication systems

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or other engineering discipline
  • Experience with testing both active and passive RF devices such as filters, amplifiers, mixers, and upconverters/downconverters
  • Experience with common RF concepts such as gain, linearity, P1dB, ACLR, EVM, PAE, S-parameters, and input/output matching
  • Experience with software design principles, software architecture, design patterns, and unit/integration testing methodology
  • Experience with environmental test methodologies and equipment such as thermal chambers and temperature forcing systems
  • Experience in troubleshooting interactions between software and hardware, such as network devices and lab instrumentation
  • Experience using Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Experience with configuration management and version control software

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as needed
