What are some typical challenges an RF Development Engineer faces when working on new wireless products?

RF Development Engineers often encounter challenges such as minimizing signal interference, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimizing circuit layout for performance and manufacturability. Collaborating closely with hardware, firmware, and testing teams is essential to quickly address issues like electromagnetic compatibility or unexpected test results. Staying up-to-date with evolving communication standards and troubleshooting complex integration problems are also common aspects of the role. These challenges make adaptability and strong problem-solving skills valuable assets in this position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF Development Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RF Development Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, strong understanding of RF circuit design, and a relevant degree such as a B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools like ADS, HFSS, or CST, as well as experience with network analyzers and spectrum analyzers, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and troubleshoot complex issues. These skills are crucial for developing reliable RF systems that meet performance standards and project requirements.

Is RF engineering in demand?

RF engineering is in high demand due to the growth of wireless communication, 5G networks, and IoT devices. RF development engineers are needed to design, test, and optimize radio frequency systems, often requiring knowledge of signal processing and tools like MATLAB or RF simulation software.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

An RF Development Engineer typically does not earn $500,000 annually; such high salaries are more common in executive or specialized roles within the tech or telecommunications industries. Senior engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills in RF design, and leadership responsibilities may approach high six-figure incomes, but reaching $500,000 usually involves additional bonuses, stock options, or executive positions.

What are RF Development Engineers?

RF Development Engineers are specialized professionals who design, develop, and test radio frequency (RF) systems and components used in wireless communication devices and networks. Their work often involves creating circuits, antennas, and modules that operate at high frequencies, ensuring optimal performance and regulatory compliance. They collaborate closely with hardware engineers, software developers, and testing teams to integrate RF solutions into products like smartphones, satellite systems, and radar equipment. RF Development Engineers also troubleshoot signal issues, analyze system performance, and help improve device efficiency and connectivity.

How much does an RF engineer earn?

RF Development Engineers typically earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in high-demand sectors like telecommunications and aerospace.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior RF Development Engineers with extensive experience, advanced technical skills, and often specialized certifications can earn $300,000 or more annually. These roles typically involve designing and testing high-frequency communication systems and may require working in high-demand industries such as telecommunications or aerospace. Compensation varies based on location, company size, and individual expertise.

Job description

The Mission: Powering the Front Lines and the Final Frontier

At NuWaves, we don’t just manage projects; we accelerate the deployment of mission-critical hardware that defines the modern battlefield and the future of space exploration. As a Project Manager (RF Products), you are the internal engine driving the success of our high-performance RF Power Amplifiers, Bidirectional Amplifiers, Filters, Frequency Converters, and more. You will serve as the central point of coordination, bridging the gap between our elite engineering domains and production to ensure our Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) and modified-COTS solutions are executed with precision for the world’s most demanding Defense and Space applications.

Why NuWaves?

We offer a high-impact environment where your organizational mastery meets global security needs. At NuWaves, you will find:

  • Mission-Critical Leadership: Lead the cross-functional execution of hardware that keeps the US Military connected and ensures the success of advanced satellite payloads.
  • Operational Mastery: Act as the primary coordinator between Engineering, Production, and Quality domains to ensure our technology is built to survive the harshest environments—from tactical ground operations to orbital deployment.
  • A Culture of Excellence: Join a team that values speed, technical integrity, and a shared commitment to those who protect us on Earth and in orbit.
  • Strategic Growth: Master the nuances of RF product lifecycles while driving continuous improvement within our internal business systems.
The Role: Coordinate, Execute, Deliver

We are looking for a results-driven leader who understands that a great product is only as good as its internal execution. You will manage the end-to-end product lifecycle, ensuring our hardware meets rigorous technical specs, stays on schedule, and hits budget targets through elite internal coordination.

In this role, you will:

  • Drive Internal Execution: Lead the cross-domain effort to deliver COTS and modified-COTS solutions, translating complex Defense and Space requirements into clear, actionable internal project plans.
  • Manage the Modification Pipeline: Oversee the internal engineering and production workflows required to adapt our core RF power amps and systems for specific mission needs, ensuring every modification meets mission-critical standards.
  • Orchestrate Domain Collaboration: Work side-by-side with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to navigate technical tradeoffs and ensure all internal milestones are met for our DoD and Aerospace partners.
  • Champion Technical Integrity: Ensure that all internal documentation and test requirements are met to guarantee that the highest quality, space-qualified hardware reaches the end-user.
  • Deliver Operational Excellence: Take full accountability for project health, ensuring >85% of your assigned product deliveries are on-time and on-budget through proactive internal management.
Your First Year: Success Metrics
  • Master Internal Workflows: Successfully navigate and complete the internal execution cycle for a major Defense or Space-grade product requirement.
  • Master NuWaves’ Catalog: Demonstrate a full grasp of our RF product line and internal domain capabilities to effectively guide hardware through the development and production lifecycle.
  • Drive Team Success: Facilitate seamless collaboration across engineering and production domains, resulting in high-quality product outputs that exceed mission requirements.
  • Hit the Mark: Maintain a track record of >85% on-time and on-budget delivery for all assigned product projects.
Requirements & Compensation
  • Salary Range: $75K - $90K (commensurate with experience).
  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
  • Experience in Technical Project Management, RF Manufacturing, or Defense/Aerospace internal operations is highly preferred.

NuWaves is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE).
