What is a retirement plan?

Retirement plans are financial arrangements designed to help individuals save and invest money for their retirement years. These plans often offer tax advantages and can be sponsored by employers (like 401(k) or pension plans) or set up individually (such as IRAs). The goal is to ensure financial security and income after you stop working. Contributions, investment growth, and withdrawals are typically governed by specific rules depending on the type of plan. Choosing the right retirement plan depends on your career, financial goals, and retirement timeline.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals managing retirement plans, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals managing retirement plans often navigate complex regulatory requirements, stay updated with changing compliance laws, and ensure accurate recordkeeping for plan participants. They also face the challenge of communicating plan details and benefits effectively to employees with varying levels of financial literacy. Addressing these challenges requires continuous education, strong attention to detail, and effective collaboration with HR, legal, and finance teams to ensure both compliance and participant satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Retirement Plan Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retirement Plan Specialist, you need expertise in retirement plan regulations, financial planning, and a relevant degree such as finance or business, often paired with credentials like the QKA or ASPPA certifications. Familiarity with retirement plan administration software, compliance systems, and financial analysis tools is important. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and clear communication help build trust with clients and ensure accurate plan management. These skills are crucial for maintaining regulatory compliance, maximizing client satisfaction, and ensuring the long-term success of retirement plans.

We are looking for a Investment & Retirement Specialist to join the Freedom Experience team. This is one of the fastest growing areas within Canada Life.ย ย

This role seeks to ensure the satisfaction and loyalty of our valued customers, so that they continue to invest their financial assets within our organization. Your objective will be to respond to customer inquiries, provide sound investment advice, and ultimately persuade them to maintain their financial engagement with Canada Life by offering exceptional customer service. If you are a highly effective listener and communicator, have a strong knowledge of retirement savings and have a passion for retaining customer loyalty, you may be an ideal candidate for this fast-paced and dynamic role.

What you will do

  • Provide personalized investment portfolio and retirement advice to our customers, specific to their portfolio and circumstances, to give them confidence in their retirement plan
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with customers through various means (phone, email, in-person and virtual appointments), managing a multitude of warm leads daily in a timely and effective manner to address inquiries about investments or retirement plans
  • Provide education and advice on financial planning and other relevant topics
  • Proactively and reactively engage with clients who are considering withdrawing their assets, asking probing questions to understand their concern and provide personalized financial solutions to address their needs.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to address client issues and improve overall satisfaction.
  • Conduct client win-back initiatives to prevent asset outflows and implement campaigns to improve client engagement and retention
  • Help the team achieve its objective to grow and retain plan member assets within their group retirement plan
  • Identify opportunities to enhance client experience and loyalty by offering value-added services, customized solutions, and personalized planning

What you will bring

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, economics, or a related field or equivalent work experience
  • Professional certifications (e.g. CFP, CFA) would be advantageous
  • Five years industry experience in financial services or related field, with a focus on sales or loyalty retention
  • Strong knowledge of pension, savings and investment products or services
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with proven effectiveness engaging with clients
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate and influence clients, presenting compelling arguments and solutions to retain their assets
  • Ability to learn quickly, adapt to change, identify patterns and make recommendations in the client's best interest
  • Sound working knowledge of MS Office products and Salesforce is beneficial
  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism is an asset (fluent in French and English) but is required for Quebec only as the position will regularly serve our clients with French and English-speaking needs

  • A Criminal Record and Credit background check is mandatory as a condition of employment
  • Reliability Status Security Clearance - this can only be completed with candidates who receive an offer of employment. This is a personal security status that is required as a condition of employment before an employee can gain access to Protected B information, assets or work sites as outlined by the Government of Canadaย  website. The cost of submitting these checks will be covered by Canada Life

Given the size and scope of our organization, we have the flexibility for this position to be located in the following head office locations: Calgary, London, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg.

-

The base salary for this position is between $59,800 - $99,700 annually. This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc). If you are selected to move forward in our recruitment process, your recruiter will be able to discuss additional details of our total rewards program with you.
