Familiarity with tools such as levels, compactors, and power saws, as well as knowledge of materials like concrete blocks or natural stone, is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for ensuring project accuracy and safety. These skills and qualities are crucial for constructing durable, stable walls that meet client specifications and comply with safety regulations.

What is a retaining wall?

Retaining walls are structures designed to hold back soil and prevent erosion or landslides on sloped areas. They are commonly used in landscaping, road construction, and to create level surfaces on uneven terrain. Retaining walls can be built from various materials, including concrete, stone, brick, or timber, and their design depends on the height and type of soil they support. Properly constructed retaining walls enhance both the stability and aesthetic appeal of outdoor spaces.

What are some common challenges faced by retaining wall installers on a typical project?

Retaining wall installers often encounter challenges such as dealing with unexpected soil conditions, managing drainage effectively to prevent water buildup, and working safely on slopes or uneven terrain. Coordinating with site managers, landscapers, and engineers is essential to ensure the wall meets structural requirements and aesthetic expectations. Job description

Job Title
Civil / Structural Drafter (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit) – Temp-to-Perm
Company Overview
We are a growing civil/structural engineering firm specializing in water and wastewater infrastructure, excavation support systems, and earth-retaining structures. Our projects include treatment plants, pipelines, contractor delegated connection designs, temporary shoring systems, and permanent retaining walls for public and private clients.
Position Summary
We are seeking a Civil / Structural Drafter with strong skills in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Revit for a temp-to-permanent role focused on water/wastewater and structural support projects. The successful candidate will support engineers in preparing detailed drawings and models for contractor delegated designs, excavation support, and retaining wall structures, with the opportunity to transition to a full-time permanent position based on performance.
Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare plans, profiles, sections, and details for water and wastewater facilities, pipelines, and associated site work using AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Develop structural drawings and 3D models in Revit for excavation support systems (e.g., soldier pile and lagging, sheet piling, bracing) and permanent retaining walls.
  • Produce contractor delegated design drawings for items such as pipe support systems, anchorage details, and miscellaneous structural components based on engineer calculations and sketches.
  • Create and maintain coordinated civil and structural models and drawing sets for treatment plants, pump stations, and related infrastructure.
  • Incorporate redlines and field markups from engineers and contractors into construction drawings quickly and accurately.
  • Maintain drawing standards, templates, and file organization for water/wastewater and structural support projects.
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and contractors to clarify design intent and ensure constructible and clear drawings.
Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years of civil and/or structural drafting experience supporting infrastructure or building projects.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D for site, grading, and utility layout drawings.
  • Experience using Revit to develop structural or building-related models and sheets.
  • Ability to interpret structural details, schedules, and reinforcement requirements for retaining walls and support-of-excavation systems.
  • Strong understanding of construction document standards, including linework, layers, dimensions, and annotation.
  • High attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience drafting for water/wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, and large-diameter pipelines.
  • Experience with excavation support and retaining wall projects, including soldier piles, sheet piles, soil nails, or mechanically stabilized earth walls.
  • Familiarity with contractor delegated design workflows and coordination with fabricators or specialty contractors.
  • Associate degree or technical diploma in drafting, CAD/BIM technology, civil engineering technology, or related field.
Employment Details
  • Job Type: Temp-to-Perm (contract-to-hire), with evaluation for full-time permanent employment.
  • Location: Aledo, TX
  • Schedule: 25 – 45 hours per week
  • Compensation: Competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience, with eligibility for benefits upon permanent hire.
How to Apply
Please submit your resume and a sample set of drawings (PDF or link) highlighting your experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Revit, especially for water/wastewater, excavation support, and retaining wall projects.
