What does an apprentice landscaper do?

An Apprentice Landscaper assists experienced landscapers with tasks such as planting, lawn maintenance, installing irrigation systems, and constructing garden features. They learn on the job by helping prepare soil, lay turf, prune plants, and use landscaping tools and machinery. The role is designed to provide hands-on experience and training in the basics of landscaping, often while completing formal coursework or an apprenticeship program. Over time, apprentice landscapers gain the skills needed to progress to more advanced roles in the landscaping industry.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an apprentice landscaper?

To thrive as an Apprentice Landscaper, you need a basic understanding of horticulture, physical fitness, and a willingness to learn on the job, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with landscaping tools, lawn equipment, and safety protocols is essential, and some employers may value certifications like OSHA training. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and good communication skills help you work effectively with supervisors and clients. These skills and qualities ensure safe, high-quality work and contribute to the successful completion of landscaping projects.

  • You work safely and steadily without needing constant reminders
  • You keep a good attitude during hard physical work
  • You follow direction, ask good questions, and learn from feedback
  • You help the crew stay productive instead of slowing the day down
  • You care about doing the work the right way
  • You get better each week and take pride in your growth
  • You begin to set an example for newer team members as your skill grows
What we're looking for
  • Valid driver's license strongly preferred and important for advancement
  • Reliable transportation to our shop in San Marcos each workday
  • Landscape, construction, hardscape, masonry, irrigation, artifical turf installation or outdoor labor experience preferred.

Compensation Pay range: $18.00-$24.00/hour, depending on experience, skill, reliability, and leadership potential. Strong team members who build skill, take ownership, and grow into higher-responsibility roles have a clear path to increased pay over time. Benefits

  • Paid vacation and sick leave
  • Growth path into higher-responsibility field leadership roles
  • Opportunity to learn landscape construction, hardscape, masonry, planting, drainage, and irrigation support
  • Work with a people-first company that values quality, teamwork, and continuous improvement
