What is a Retail Software Developer?

A Retail Software Developer is a technology professional who designs, develops, and maintains software applications specifically for the retail industry. These applications can include point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management tools, e-commerce platforms, and customer relationship management solutions. Retail Software Developers work to ensure that retail businesses can operate efficiently, provide better customer experiences, and adapt to changing market needs. Their work often involves collaborating with other IT professionals, understanding retail business requirements, and implementing security and scalability best practices.

How does a Retail Software Developer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a retail organization?

Retail Software Developers frequently work alongside product managers, UX/UI designers, and data analysts to deliver solutions that enhance the retail customer experience. They participate in regular team meetings to gather requirements, provide technical input, and ensure alignment with business goals. Effective communication and collaboration skills are essential, as developers often integrate their work with point-of-sale systems, inventory management, and e-commerce platforms. This collaborative environment helps ensure that software solutions are robust, user-friendly, and meet the evolving needs of both customers and staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Retail Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retail Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, C#, or JavaScript), a solid understanding of retail business processes, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Experience with point-of-sale (POS) systems, e-commerce platforms, and databases, as well as familiarity with version control tools like Git, is highly valuable. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and adaptability are essential soft skills that help manage changing requirements and work effectively with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure you can build reliable, user-friendly retail software solutions that directly support business goals and customer satisfaction.

Job description

At Qualtrics, we create software the world's best brands use to deliver exceptional frontline experiences, build high-performing teams, and design products people love. But we are more than a platform-we are the creators and stewards of the Experience Management category serving over 18K clients globally. Building a category takes grit, determination, and a disdain for convention-but most of all it requires close-knit, high-functioning teams with an unwavering dedication to serving our customers.
When you join one of our teams, you'll be part of a nimble group that's empowered to set aggressive goals and move fast to achieve them. Strategic risks are encouraged and complex problems are solved together, by passing the mic and iterating until the best solution comes to light. You won't have to look to find growth opportunities-ready or not, they'll find you. From retail to government to healthcare, we're on a mission to bring humanity, connection, and empathy back to business. Join over 5,000 people across the globe who think that's work worth doing.
Software Engineer I - Topics Core Platform Team
Why We Have This Role
The Topics Core Platform team is building the next generation of text analytics capabilities powered by AI and LLMs. This role sits at the intersection of greenfield innovation and production impact, where you'll help shape how Qualtrics customers extract meaning from their data. You'll work on features that interact with LLMs and agentic systems, collaborating across product, design, and quality engineering to deliver capabilities that matter. This is a chance to work on cutting-edge technology while building products that directly impact our customers' ability to understand their data.
How You'll Find Success
  • Takes initiative on projects with clear outcomes and context, working entrepreneurially to solve problems.
  • Writes clean, well-tested code and understands the importance of code reviews and best practices in software development.
  • Collaborates effectively across functions (PM, UX, QE, and other engineering teams) and communicates clearly about progress and blockers.
  • Learns new technologies quickly and adapts to shifting priorities as the team explores what works in the AI space.
  • Contributes to team knowledge by sharing learnings and helping others level up on new tools and approaches.
  • Demonstrates curiosity about the full stack, from backend systems to user-facing interfaces, and is willing to work across the entire technology spectrum.
  • Shows ownership of features end-to-end, driving work forward even when it requires coordination with multiple teams.

How You'll Grow
  • Work directly with LLMs and agentic systems, technologies that are reshaping software development and where hands-on experience is rare and valuable.
  • Ramp quickly on a modern tech stack (TypeScript, Node.js, React, Python, SQL) with a team that documents and shares learnings daily.
  • Grow your full-stack capabilities by working across frontend and backend systems on the same features.
  • Develop cross-functional collaboration skills by partnering with product, design, and other engineering teams on complex projects.

Things You'll Do
  • Build and ship features that leverage LLMs and agentic systems to power Qualtrics' text analytics capabilities, working across the full stack from database to UI.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams in the Enrichments space to integrate your work and unblock downstream dependencies.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and quality practices that keep the codebase maintainable and reliable as the team scales.
  • Learn and apply new AI tooling and development practices alongside your teammates, contributing to the team's collective knowledge base.
  • Contribute to the team's approach to agile development, experimenting with new ideas and iterating quickly based on what works.
  • Drive ownership of assigned projects, managing dependencies and communication with stakeholders to ensure successful delivery.

What We're Looking For On Your Resume
  • Degree in Computer Science or related technology field
  • 0 - 2 years of full time work experience in software development
  • Familiarity with software development lifecycle practices, including code reviews, testing, and collaboration with other engineers.
  • Experience with at least one modern programming language and willingness to learn TypeScript, Node.js, React, and Python.
  • Some exposure to UI development is helpful but not required; the team can teach the specifics of the tech stack.
  • Ideally, you've worked in a full-stack environment or shown the ability to move fluidly between frontend and backend work.
  • A track record of shipping features or projects, even in academic or personal projects, that demonstrates you can take work from concept to completion.

What You Should Know About This Team
  • We're working on greenfield projects with room to express creativity and build as we go, not tied down by legacy systems.
  • We embrace an agile philosophy where we try things, learn quickly, and iterate based on what works.
  • Almost every feature we build interacts with LLMs or AI systems, and we're investing heavily in the agentic space, giving you the chance to work on technology that excites the industry.
  • We learn together as a team, sharing discoveries about AI tooling and development practices daily during standups and recording sessions for future reference.
  • You'll work closely with PM, UX, QE, and other engineering teams, developing the cross-functional collaboration skills that define senior engineers.

Our Team's Favorite Perks and Benefits
  • Access to cutting-edge AI and LLM technology, with the opportunity to work on agentic systems that are reshaping how software is built.
  • Competitive salary, performance bonuses, generous 401(k) Match
  • Wellness Reimbursement for $300 per quarter for wellness activities including gym memberships, spa massages, workout equipment, meditation apps, and much more.
  • $1800 Experience bonus to be used for an "Experience" of your choosing
  • Daily catered lunches in office, come join us in Provo or Seattle
